Hey all, what whitespot treatment do you use in tanks that contain shrimp?

I have a couple of algae shrimp in with an endler. The endler has a slight case of whitespot, but i know without treatment it will get worse and eventually kill the fish.

Also if i remove the shrimp to treat the tank, when is it safe to return the shrimp?

Help!

It would be best if you could move the fish with Ich or move the inverts and plants (if any) out of the tank. Here's a nice long article on Ich which also covers the various treatments http://www.skepticalaquarist.com/docs/health/ich.shtml

After the treatment is over, do a series of 25% PWC's and run fresh carbon in your filter to remove any traces of the meds. This should be done after any treatment.

I had to do something today. I've put a dose of Interpet Whitespot plus in the tank. In all the information it says nothing about not using in tanks containing shrimps or crustaceans so fingers crossed. It doesn't mention copper in any of the treatments.

For Ich you have to treat the tank as the parasite can only be killed when it is in it's free swimming stage in the water. If i took the fish out to treat it, i'd have to treat the other tank anyway.

I use FGM by NTlabs in tanks with inverts
1 ml per 40ltr for 5 consecutive days with temp raised to 30C

I've used Interpet Whitespot meds with no ill effects on the shrimp.

That's good to know, not having kept shrimp before i didn't want to kill them!!!

You guys/gals in the UK need to get on your politicians. They are so strict about what they will allow you to import or own, but then they let the companies sell stuff without saying what's in it. I've noticed that on all of the Interpet medications/chemicals and every other med/chemical sold in the UK.

In the USA, companies are required to publish an MSDS (Manufacturers Safety Data Sheet) that lists most of the ingredients unless they are so new that they are protected by trade secret information. I've never been able to find anything like that on UK meds/chemicals.

UK meds will normally tell you the active ingredients on them, such as malachite green, formalin, formaldehyde, etc. I'm sure copper or copper sulphate is mentioned when used also.

That's good. I can never find the active ingredients in any of the online ads for the meds.

A new law comes into effect very soon that says all animal medications will have to state their active ingredients on the package.
this will mean that all fish meds will have a full list of what is in it.
