They are probably blood worms.
But...Ive never seen a picture of a blood worm! :p

I caught some wonderful little worms in a local canal.
They bury themselves in the sand sticking part of their body in the "free waters"
Waving around like little flags.Thin as a hair , they are blood red.
Every so often they "tap" the ground and either poop or have a baby- I don't know which yet-LOL.
They lived is MASSES upon MASSES-Like thousands- in one small clump-
there are..er.. were rather several small clumps scattered about each other.
The water they lived in had no flow- but didnt smell stagnant.
At times of heavy rain that gulley/ditch could be a raging mini river though.

Are they blood worms?
Pardon my ignorance- LOL!
BTW- the fish LOVE them---nummy nummy!

Sounds more like tubifex - they bury themselves partly in the mud and wave about. Blood worms are free swimming jobbies.

>>> LL- is that a My Little Pony in your avatar?

Err, no, err, (keep taking the tablets dear). ;)

It is called "Abstract 37". It's a computer generated mashing of a photograph, in this case, some empty bottles.

Make sure you wash out the tubiflex (Which is does sound like). It has a bit of a harsh rep for carrying disease. :/
