My fish has a problem that has been persisting for about a month and a half. It started out as just a spot so we thought Ick, so we ran out and bought Ick medicine. It didn't work, and it got bigger and his dorsal fin started to swell up. So we though maybe fungus. Ran out to buy fungus meds, But that didn't work either. Now it's gotten really bad and we've been changing the water and cleansing the tank with boiling water. We put a quarter teaspoon of aquarium salt in the tank, and dechlorinate the water every time we change it. I'm really not a betta expert here but it seams that SOMETHING should be working now.

This is how bad it's gotten:

oh yeah, his tank is about 1/2 gallon and he has marbles and a little plant in it, but it seems to get dirty quickly.

how often are you feeding him, ideally you should be feeding once every other day and then its small amounts, that would explain the water getting dirty quickly???? just a thought mind.

if he's had it for a month then the chances that the previous meds have been having some sort of effect and this is why he is still alive but they arent curing it completely, i used a wide spectrum for most signs of diseases which is myxazin, the only thing with this is if you have been using protozin to treat the whitespot then 4 day+ must pass before you use this to treat as a bad chemical reation occurs, i find it works wonders on sores, fungus and bacterial infections, it seems to be a lot stronger than any other med and does no harm at all, needs to be added to the tank over a 5 day period.
ideally feed him on live foods as well every other 3rd day to increase his immune sytem and with the fight he already has he should get rid

Thank you very much for replying.

We feed him one a day in the mornings but since he got sick it seems like the tank is getting dirty much more quickly than before. Keep in mind he's two years old and we got him from Walmart.

Where can I find some of the medications you mentioned? So far we've only been using stuff from Petsmart and those types of medicine treat a wide variety of illnesses so I'm still not sure what exactly he has. So far we've had him on maracyn-two for the past two weeks but it's not doing any good...

What live food do you feed your bettas?

 my bettas have had that fungus stuff on them. I use pimafix which seems to work for most diseases. If you have had him for a couple of years his age is probably against him making a full recovery. You are doing a good job though if he is still fighting the illness. :good: :good:

we might pick up[ some pimafix or malafix this weekend but I'm apprehensive to treat him without knowing what I'm treating him for. It's like shoting in the dark with this fish because I don't even know what's wrong with him.

his age will be against him, good age for a betta, well done for keeping him for this period of time
melafix is anti bacterial and pimafix is anti fungal, you cant be to sure what it actually is , a treatment that is a lot stroger and more wide spectrum is needed, as for finding it where you are im not to sure, you will have to wait to see if anyone can give you a place to go to who is familiar to your country, sorry im in the wrong country

I think you need to remove all ornaments from his container if you are going to successfully treat him and keep the tank super clean.

Plus when you take the stuff out you can sterilize them before you add them back to the tank when he is better.

If you are in the states then try to get a hold of Mardel Maracyn Tc, and follow the course of medication on the packet.

But you do need to keep the bowl as clean as possible.

Good luck. :good:

I can't help with the specific illness but my friend has an aged betta who has always been a little delicate and she found he responded much better to meds when he was sick if she took him out of his tank and put him in a large but shallow bowl. It held a lot more water so it stayed cleaner, but it was also easier for him to get to the surface to breathe. You need to make sure it hasn't had soap or anything in it though. Hope this helps.

Looks like columnaris to me. Especially with the fading of colour around the infected area. I'd definitley go with something a bit stronger than melafix. Myxazin is a good suggestion, just be sure not to overdose. It's very easy to overdose in smaller tanks.

Thank you everyone, You've all offered my with great suggestions and im a little more confident in treating him. I will certainly try your suggestions and hopefully smibby will be back on his...er...fins in no time. :)
