You said that there was a shift in dominance right? Are you sure the rottie was not getting harassed or was he picking on everyone? Sometimes the bully fish stresses its self out always chasing the other fish around. Maybe he was stressed before you bagged him? Then the chancing him around to get him out added more stress. Then he just you know..... Was this fish older?

Look on the good side you saved the others.

Stress can kills thats a fact. It is not always caused due to poor water.

sorry for your loss, I can confirm stress and horny fish kill. My male German blue got a bit horned up and Killed his women trying to point her tworeds his nest. Another time i have another pair and they were spawning well etc, and the male had worms so i gave him some prazipro and killed the worms he also got a bit ill from the sores for about 3 days and the female was golden during this until i noticed her quivering by the male and turned dark then died a few hours later. that was really weird.

nothing harassed the rottie he was easily the dominant fish in the tank . until now he was never agressive but everything certainly gave way to him .

Sorry for your loss

It sounds odd, like maybe a brain tumor or something - sudden aggression can be the first sign of something like that in animals. The sudden death afterwards could be stress linked to something like that.

I know a lady on another forum whose husband was almost killed when the family dog suddenly went for his throat after years of happy peaceful family pet life - turns out the dog had a massive tumor, luckily her hubby survived.

Dont quote me on this but I dont think fish can get rabies.

Its a Fact fish can not get rabies. Only warm blooded mammals can get rabies. But health problems and cause animals to act strange. That is very true.
