I have what i think are 2 Zebra danio one seems to chase after the other one some time a couple of times round the tank, is this normal? are they just 'playing'?

I also have 2 Algae eaters, not sure if thats the proper name for them? One of them seems a bit fatter than the other one and seems to be very shy, it spends most of the time inside one of my orniments when it does come out it will quickly swim about for a bit and then dart back to its 'home'. The other seems quite happy sucking away at the gravel and glass. I was just wondering if the 'shy' one may be ill or something?

Thanks

Martyn...

Quite normal for the danios, if you add a couple more then the chasing will be evened out in the group so not only one fish would be chased all the time.

Also, you need to find out what fish you are putting in you tank b4 they get in there! :D

If you want us to help you with your problems, we need to know what fish you have in your tank.

Both of those descriptions sound normal to me and typical of the fish, although danios should really be in groups of 5 (i only have 3 myself) but this will help reduce any chasing of other tank mates as they will keep to themselves, and will also mean that your 'victim' danio does not get too stressed by being chased aroud all the time.

Your algae eaters are most probably Chinese Algae Eaters, also called sucking loaches get aggressive when they get older (2-3") towards each other and will stop eating algae and prefer more meaty food. They also have the potential to latch onto flat sided fish like gouramis and cause considerable damage to their slime coats. Maybe they should be returned to your lfs when / if they start acting up....

Thanks for the replys.

I had the tank from a friend who got it from a friend neither of which were very interested they just bought which fish they thought looked nice and what the LFS told them to get, hence I wasnt too sure what I had, but Im learning! and am a newbie myself.

I also have a male betta and from the little I have just read about the Chinese Algae Eaters he sounds just the type of fish they like to attack when older is this right?

I have 9 danios and they are always chasing each other around :)
They've been doing it since i got them about 6 weeks ago so i guess its normal.

Funnily enough I was going to ask exactly the same question, I currently only have 3 zebra danios and they're always chasing each other around the tank. I was worried at first but since searching the web have discovered that it's normal behaviour for them.

It's extremely enjoyable to watch them as well.

I have a couple zebra danios (probably going to get a couple more), and they chase each other too. I am no fish expert, but they chase each other in my tank too. So it's most likely normal, like everyone else has said :p .
