i released all my fry into the big tank, simply because i won't have room for them if they grow up anyways so if they're eaten it's no biggie. i've noticed that my two largest and oldest fry, a pair of Twin Bars, are becoming quite odd.

first off, they are growing. all three Twin Bars are creamy yellow with the back bars on their tails very pronounced, and the two biggest both have and orange-ish color to their dorsal. the two odd fry also have something funky going on with their anal fins, the bottom few rays are becoming thicker and the rest thinner, while the last fry has an evenly growing anal fin.

now, these two oddballs will circle around each other, tail fins shimmering, and them smack at each other with their tails and retreat, only to get back together two seconds later and start again until someone backs down.

is this normal?

I find it hard to comprehend what you have stated, but if its what I think it is then no its not normal! It sounds like they could have a defective gene for the tail formation. I've never witnessed this before in platies is there any tail there at all at the bottom - perhaps its just lightly coloured?

If this fish continue growing then that is obviously a good sign but chances are they won't survive much longer if they do indeed have a faulty tail.

Keep us posted!

i didn't say anything about a fault tail  i said the two largest are smacking each other with their tails, and i was asking about their anal fins. they seem to be growing in thicker at the bottoms/fronts. the fish are growing fine, they're the spunkiest little critters i've seen, i was just worried if one of the fry might get the upperhand and clobber his/her sibling so hard it harms them.
