I came home today, checked on Lotus and he never came to greet me :(

He was lay in the Java Fern then i noticed his big eye :(

I really thought he had died because he never moved, so i got all upset but then my b/f shouted me saying he just went and got some air.

I have changed 50% of the water, lowered the level and turned his light off.

Anything else i need to do, I am sooo gutted, I love my Lotus! :-(

awww...im soooo sorry! i dont know much about popeye but i know they make meds for it. i hope he gets better! he is gorgeous!

There is a broad spectrum medication that includes pop eye if I recall correctly. Here's some more info on Pop eye

Thanks for the replies :)

He's not looking good unfortunately ... he's just lying on the sand barely moving and not really going up for any air :(

oh bless him, hows he holding out?

that makes a bit more sense tbh, i just lost a guppy to popeye, dunno how he got it, and it took him quite fast too

He stays on the bottom, sometimes on his side, and then goes to get some air and back down again, I am so gutted, it just doesn't look good. I am trying to stay positive but he looks so so fed up :-(

Well this morning checked on him, he is sat on the heater so he is close to the surface for air. I dropped a pellet right in front of him and he ate it, tried another but wasn't interested.

I am at work now so i won't know how is doing :( I don't think my boss would understand me going home for him, people don't who don't have them.

Come on Lotus, please get better :-(

doubtful it was caused by injury if he is acting that way. i would take honeythorn's advice and get a good broad spectrum antibiotic. popeye isnt a disease in its own right, more a symptom of an underlying cause. can be anything from bacterial, to viral (which you cant treat anyway) to the begining stages of dropsy, to parasites in the eye.
another thing you can do is give epsom salt baths to help draw the fluid out of the eye. 1 Tablespoon/5 gal. can put him in the bath for up to 30 mins. just make sure you use EPSOM salt and not aquarium or marine salt. and get that antibac med if you can. increase aeration during treatment. please, do NOT use melafix.
it is good that he ate at least something. try to get a hold of some garlic, chop it up, roll his food around in it. helps to stimulate appetite and boost immune system.
does he appear bloated at all? or is it just his eye? any flicking or rubbing? any other symptoms?
best of luck. its horrible to have a sick pet and feel so very helpless.
cheers

Thank you for the reply.

Where can i buy the spectrum anti-biotic?

As far as the salt is concerned, I have just read you can buy this from a chemist? (I only have aquarium salt, so I will NOT use this), I take him out of his tank and treat with the salt in a container?

I hope is is ok when i get home from work, 1hr 45mins til I can go home!

No flicking or any other symptoms.

if in the US, any petsmart/petco/ even some walmarts carries meds. if in UK i dont know (im from the states). as far as the epsom salt goes, yes...treat in a separate container/bucket. you can get epsom salt in any pharmacy/ drugstore. even most large grocery stores carry it in the medicine section. it is VERY cheap. the compound name is magnesium sulfate. (unlike table salt which is sodium chloride). dose at 1 Tablespoon/5 gal or a little less than a teaspoon/gal.
best of luck!

Well ... I've come home from work and he seems so much better!!

He is swimming about almost as much as he normally does  he even came to greet me when I walked in

I have dropped 4 little pellets in and he gobbled the lot

I've done another 50% water change and will keep my "eye" on him ... his eye doesn't appear to be any worse as far as I can see, maybe slightly?

I'm just so happy to see him swimming around again, almost back to his normal friendly self

Do I still need to give him the salt bath? I went and got some Epsom salt after work.

it wouldnt hurt to give him a salt bath...but up to you...gl;ad hes looking better well, acting anyway). those salts are nice for people too, so dont think youve bought them for nothing...put some in a nice hot bath, or soak your feet...feels nice! lots of folks use them for soothing properties.
anyway, hope he is on the mend.
cheers
