i am thinking of adding a plec to my tank but the tank is heavily planted and at 30C due to discus. is there a plec that can stand the temp and not eat my plants? also the tank is 4 ft so nothing massive please......!

Matt

How much do you want to spend?, how big really max do you want them to get?.

There are loads of species which would suit a planted high temp tank but prices can differ dramatically.

size wise i was thinking no bigger than about 6-8 inches ish and price wise not really thought about that but dont mind spending good money for the right plec i guess.....
i was thinking of something a bit different to the bristlenose, something with nice colours/patterns etc.
ive looked on planet catfish and the list is huge! also i dont know which ones are available thats why i thought i would try on here :good:

Bristlenose would be fine at that temp, mine have been.

They'll survive yes, but that's too warm for them.

L46 like those temps but would probably be too expensive.

I have been told that you could be looking at £100 pound for a baby zebra pleco (L46). I did want one but it's a bit expensive. :(

you can get them for half that price if you look around.
a zebra plec looks amazing. do they eat plants? or algae? will they pull out my plants?

i dont mind paying £50 for the right fish, ive just paid £70 for a discus............

I would stay away from Zeb's if you have discus in the tank, from my experience with discus they are very ferocious eaters and don't let up until all or most of the foods are gone. Zeb's really don't compete to well for food and would be quite timid around fish like discus.

Most hypan species would be 'ok' at that temp, have a look on PC and see which you like the look of, really and honestly we couldn't pick a plec for you. If your anything like me i like to browse and chose a fish i like rather than been recommended.

As i said have at look a hypancistrus species and see what you like, L66,L333,L270,L411 might be worth looking at aswell as L260 but again for the 260's i found my group used to be a little bit timid compared to other hypan species and making sure they get fed enough/sufficiently in a discus tank may be more hassle than it's worth.

Ive kept all the above species in temps of around 84-86 and they have all bred so even though it's very very top end temp, they were happy enough to breed so IMO would be happy enough to live.

thanks mate that narrows the search down by a huge amount :good:

Your welcome mate, let us know what you end up going for :).

Jo's prices are excellent mate. Have the 5 and you should easily sell the rest on. Just be careful the discus don't see them as food and try pecking at them.

the tank is heavily planted with lots on no go zones for the discus so they should be ok.... do they grow very quick as i could put them in another tank until a bit bigger?
do you have any experience with either?, if so which of the 2 would be more suitable?
