The main point of having plants is for them to produce oxegen and make the water breathable for the fish. You dont need a forest of plantes. You need quite a lot of Hornwort hat will kepp the amonia down. Amozn sword and Valsnaria are good hardy plants.Duck weds and java moss are good. The water turns a little yellow but nothung major like mirk an mire. All of it will balance in time . I do recommend starting with cheap and hardy fish to get it all balanced.

"murk and mire" are not major really. It is very simple to use them in an aquarium and not get dirty water.
That's why I stressed using sand over the top. ;)

I still cant belive Im the only one who thinks planted

You're not the only one that thinks planted....

Adrinal-
I never thought of this method compared to salt. But, I guess you could compare the two. :fun:

Wahoo! I'm on my way to saltwater! :kana:

Been thinking about doing a SW native tank... *drools*.

My 60-liter planted tank doesn't have a filter. There is male and female betta, couple honey gouramis and about 20 amano shrimps, malaysian trumpet snails and two zebra snails. And lots of plants. I change 30-50% of water once a week (and I never siphon the substrate) and add liquid fertiliser, peat extract and CO2. There is also a layer of clay and peat under the fine sand (0,2-1,2mm) and some Tetra ZMF Crypto -tablets. Fluorescent tubes, 1W/liter.

Everything works fine, water parametres are good, fishes are breeding and the plants grow like crazy.

This is a picture of it a month ago right after heavy pruning.
60-liter planted tank

It works if you don't have a heavy fish load.
