Hi,

I set up my new secondhand tank yesterday. It's a 2.5 foot Clearseal, just under 100 litres / 30 USG

Came with two internal filters, a Fluval 3 and a Fluval 1. Whereas the Fluval 1 is pretty much silent the 3 is SO noisy!!! I knwo it's and old filter and I was expecting it to make a bit more noise than the little ones, but is this normal? Is there something I should be doing to prime it? It only has sponges in it - I took out the solid media to see if that would cut down the rattling. It sounds as if it is rattling against the tank even though it isn't and I have checked all the bits to make sure nothing is loose.

No way I can live with this noise - so I was thinking of ordering either this [post="0"]Penn plax[/post] filter or this [post="0"]tetratec[/post] one. Any recommendations? I want to keep it under the £25 mark if possible.

Thanks

It may only be the vibration of the filter transmitting itself to the mains cable; I had a Fluval 4 plus originally and the noise used to annoy me until I moved the mains cable slightly and the noise stopped.

Yep that could be it. Other things to check is that there is nothing clogging the impeller (or any grains of sand etc in there) or that the impeller isn't worn/broken. I have used a lot of fluval internals and never had any problems with the being loud, maybe give it a couple of hours and see if it goes away (some filters take a little while to "settle").

seems to have been covered. but i would check that the filter is, securely attached to the side of the aquarium, and that there is no damage, or fouling to the impeller
