Hi folks,
This is my first post on this forum and I am wondering if you could lend a hand. I have a 180 ltr tank and at the moment using a magic jet 1000 in tank filter. It does its job fine apart from it is quite loud, ie it has a quite loud buzz when running and its starting to bug me. Are there any good "quiet" filters out there in the uk market that could solve my problem.

thanks in advance

Elektron.

The 'buzz' is usually created from the wires vibrating on whatever they touch onthe way to the plug..

..Easily fixed with a little foam where the wire hangs out of the tank, [cheap method].

No I am quite sure it is from the filter, I had moved the wires and it makes no difference, its just the filter noise.

Also could be the filter vibrating against the glass if it is not just the suction cups touching. I have a POW brand 500lph which is silent but for the bubble noise from the venturi, and a couple of aqua-one filters which are also very quiet.

And welcome to the Forum.

Now the tank is stocked and fully running, will it be safe to put a new filter in there to replace the noisy one or is there some precedure i need to follow to ensure no harm comes to the water quality or fish.

Regards

Elektron

If you can use the old filter media ie sponge in the new filter you should be alright. If you can't add the old media to the new filter then try and put some old media in or have the old media attached to the new filter to seed the new filter.

Or you could run the new filter along side the old one for 2-3 weeks, which allows time for the new filter to 'cure' then remove the old filter.

I have gone for the FLUVAL 4 PLUS, and just waiting for delivery of it, would it work if I just put the new filter in the tank alongside the old one but did not run it, so I would not have 2 filters pumping at the same time. Or would this not work?

Cheers Elektron

Hi,

I am about to do the same thing with my new Tetratec EX700 external filter. I am currently running with a Fluval 3+ filter, which runs silently as I have removed the Air Venturi. I will run both filters side by side for a good few weeks, probably until after I get back form my Hols, Mid August.

Thanks for the advice, just one more question, will this not make the water movement to strong for the fish, having to large filters running together?

Cheers elektron.
