My new Fluval 107 external filter is up and running, it's in a cabinet sitting on top of a bit of carpet, it has a bit of hum, which I could do to tone done, i have the flow lever at half way, to cut the flow a bit, but has made no difference to the hum, I'm surprised it's louder than my Fluvai 207, any ideas how to make it it quieter?

on another fluval filter subject, the ceramic pin that holds the impeller, if you unlucky to break it whilst replacing when cleaning, seemingly you could purchase the pin, singularly and keep it as a spare, but now fluval has stopped this, you now have to buy an impeller kit, even if you only want the pin, that's OK, if you need an impeller, but what if you don't the kit consists of an impeller, ceramic pin, impeller cover and an o ring, costing about £20. And you only want a pin.

I recently got a canister filter and it was loud for the first few days but has gone pretty silent now just a slight hum from the pump. I think mine had trapped air which caused the noise as it is a very basic design canister filter. Perhaps it could be air? Hopefully, another member with more experience in canister filters has a better idea :)

Thanks, I remember my 207 had air trapped, and I read to give the canister a shake, and it did work, so I will try that, but any other suggestions will be welcomed.

Put a towel under the filter to cushion it.

Contact the company that makes them and ask if they are meant to make a noise (they aren't). It might have a noisy motor and they might replace it under warranty.

I've saw in video, that if you lightly rub a very small amount of silicone lube, onto the impeller post, this can help.

The towel has definitely helped, have you heard of using silicone lube on the impeller post?

Not for aquarium use. The impeller and shaft have a tiny bit of clearance between them so it can spin freely but not move about. Adding anything to the shaft will thicken it and reduce the clearance, potentially stopping the impeller spinning properly and maybe damaging the motor.

You can use petroleum jelly, it's perfectly safe and works great.

If you can get your hand on a tube of Jack's Formula 327. This stuff is the best. It's a 100% Silicone lube.

"Hayward Jacks Formula 327 Lube is a unique lubricant and protecting agent for equipment exposed to water. Designed to eliminate rust, corrosion and reduce visible wear by up to 80 percent. It can be used on all metal parts and/or gaskets that are exposed to water, salt, pool chemicals or constant water pressure."

I never changed an impeller shaft in my life. I have an Aquaclear that is more than 35 years old and there is no visible wear on the shaft no rust and there is no play at all on the impeller.
