Hey guys, ive got a 55 gal tank with a pair of convicts, a JD and an albino rainbow shark. Ive been told that getting a predatory nocturnal catfish could help lower the number of eggs at night when the lights are out. what kinds could work??

Thanks!

Given this is presumeably to eat Convict eggs, your choice of safe catfish is relatively limited, these cichlids are the devil incarnate when breeding! Is your Rainbow Shark not brave enough... how big is it compared to the Convicts?

i would be happy to say that anything you put in with convicts when they are breeding will get smashed to hell and back!! my friend has a pair of convicts that are only about 2" tops a piece, they smash his featherfin syno, 6" oscar and 7" green terror to crap and his 10" plec is pretty much bulletproof but ignore the eggs and his red tail shark stays away aswell, so if you want to keep a new fish looking new, dont put it in with a breeding pair of convicts :p

Banjo cat... will hide all day and come out when its dark.

No matter what fish you put, those eggs will survive unless you chuck a couple whales in there.
Even at night when the lights out, the father still guards the nest all night.

thanks you everyone. I appreciate all of your input. i dont think i am going to risk the lives of my other fish after all. i plan on giving the male back to my GFs dad (original owner). they havent shown any signs of getting along anyway. i think the male may be too big for her.
But thanks again everyone, you may have saved some lives in my tank!
