hey all....
got home from work today and my hydor prime 10 external filter has packed in.....ive put my original interpet pf2 internal in for now...i like my internal its nice a powerful really circulates the water in the tank which i like because Ive got plants and creates lots of bubbles that float around the tank and its nice....i changed it because i wanted to get rid of the hideous look of an internal and the room it takes up but i wanted the same effect nice and powerful with lots of bubbles floating about so i bought the hydor hoping it would do the same but to be honest it didn't and i was disappointed to begin with and now this has happened I'm annoyed but happy at the same time if that makes sense? ha ha

so i ask you all...what external filter do i get next? i want that effect of the PF2 but an external....ive got 65L fishbox and am looking into getting a Roma 125 in the coming months so would like something for the long run to be honest....any recommendations??
i seen the eheim 2213 classic but dint know anything about them

thanks
Adam

I Was running a classic eheim but I hate it. I hate how annoying it is to clean and how it does not prime well. I hate how the tube comes out the bottom. I bought it new ran it 2 years and it slow down. The flow was not as strong as it was when I got it. I would clean it out and no improvement. So needless to say that filter is empty and sitting in the garage. I use aqua clear filters that hang on the back and have amazing flow. The flow rate is so great it keeps me tank really clean. Then for canister filter the Fluval Are great. I got my Fluval 405 used and it works great. It's quite, easy to clean, a breeze to set up, and when the flow rate seems low all I do is clean it and it runs like new. I love this filter.

Those are the only filters I will ever use.

+1 for the Fluval, but i have never used any others so can't really comment. :)

Good luck with your choice, keep us posted.

Yup, agree, the Fluval is great.

When I got my tank, I was deciding between Fluval ad Eheim. A friend of mine who also keeps fish had an Eheim in the past, and he said it was horrendous. So I went the Fluval route.

But to be fair, there are people out there who love the Eheims. So I guess it is a matter of preferance.

i have an eheim classic 2217 and ive had no problems with it in the 6 yrs i have it.
the only fault with it IMO is the clips to hold the top on,they come off easily.

why not have a look at the ALL POND SOLUTIONS externals..
i dont have one myself but ive heard nothing but good reviews of them and the are also cheaper

the only fluval i have is the u4 and IMO its the worst internal ive ever had.. its way too flimsy and flow gets reduced quite fast

ok thanks for all the replies guys very helpful!!

i researched the 205 and it sounds very positive and i wanted the spray bar kit with it too.....my 2nd question is will i be over filtering the tank and is that bad?? if its not i may aswell upgrade to the 305 for a tenner or not??
thank u all for your great help!!

Try looking at an APS filter i bought one a few months ago, does a pretty good job well build and comes with plenty of media

thank u all for your great help!!

I have a Eheim 2215, with no problems at all. Running for 6 months, time will tell how it holds out. Flow rate strong as ever, I had a fluval 205 and it leaked, changed the o-ring, it leaked again, fiddled with it for ages, it leaked again. Primed, it leaked again. I also had severe flow issues with it. It is luck of the draw sometimes.

I view my basic canister filter like a basic car engine. If there is a problem it's not going to be complicated to sort out. I wouldn't want something too advanced that has expensive spares, or requires specialist attention.

German engineering is normally great - Hagen who produce Fluval products were originally from Germany, and German manufacturing base - now based HQ in Canada I believe. Eheim still operate from Germany.

The Fluval 305 my friend has works absolutely fine, and he loves it! So it's a good choice - The media baskets are pretty neat I must admit. Also I believe you can get a venturi tube to get your bubble effect! :D

ahh why is it do hard to choose!! i like the sounds of the fluvals because they come with 3 yrs guarantee...but the eheim have so many attachments and accessories! ahhhh this is a night mare haha
thanks for your advice danbarb....but what does a venturi tube do??

I had a Fluval 205 and replaced with an APS 1400l/h + 9w UV filter, best decision I ever made.

The Fluval is some what over rated in my eyes, It was ok but the stated flow rate and the real flow rate left something to be desired. If you are planning to upgrade a 205 would be useless on a 125 tank and a 305/405 just starts adding to the cash.

I would advise going for an APS because of the value for money you get, you could even go as far as getting a 2000l/h and you get the spray bar included etc. However with the Fluval 205 you don't get a spray bar kit and ontop of the price of the filter it starts to get expensive for such a low end filter package.

ah those aps filter sound alright im going to have a look into them thanks for that....havent heard a bad thing about them really but one thing im not sure about with them is whats a uv filter??
if i cant over filter a tank i may look a bit closer to a 305 then but if this aps filter is a good un then i may get one of those,
do i need to have a uv filter?? what ever they are? lol
thanks fror the comments everyone really helping!
