No Gravel Or Sand? Opinions?

Point taken tall tree. Ill be the bigger person. I agree about light substrate

I saw a discus tank with no substrate....
 
Thought it looked pretty damn good to be honest. It had terracotta plant pots with swords. The discus were showing off their colours impressively, which I believe is a sign of their comfort, and they are very fussy from what I gather. Still, what works for some, doesn't for others.
 
I personally wouldn't go bare bottom

   The tank I mention did look great, but it was more an attempt at 70's modernism than an aquarium....
