Hi folks. I'm brand new here.
Have kept aquariums every year for the past 20+ ... except for these last 4 years. Now I'm hoping to set up again as a winter project. This time a 75 gal, which I've never done before. And I'm discovering there's lots of new techniques and new products out there! (i.e., undergravel heaters. Hmmm.)

But my situation presents a problem. I live in quite a remote area in Northern Maine, USA. The closest pet-anything store is a Walmart  and the next closest Petco or Petsmart is 3.5 hours away by car.

How does one transport fish long distances by car.... or... are there mail order places and are they too risky for the fish's health?

Thanks for anyone's response!

P.S. Still in planning stages as to what fish. I LOVE the fancy Angels. But with 75 gal... who knows. Much will depend on WHERE I can obtain fish and equipment.

Oh yeah... another question... We have frequent power outages here. They don't last long - often instantaneous, but sometimes up to 2 or 3 hours. Got any suggestions if this will need any special electrical considerations? Thanks!

Get an UPS from any Office Supply store. (Wal-Mart might carry them, not sure) Basically they are a power strip that has a battery in it that can power a computer for 5-15 minutes. Lights, filter, etc for an aquarium require much less power than a computer, and should keep everything running for a few hours if the power goes out. I suggest turning the lights out and just have the filter and heater plugged in to maximize the amount of time that back-up power will last.

UPS generally costs $30-$50, and compared to the $ invested in the tank, not too big of an investment, IMHO.

Link for office depot. I'd compare prices for OfficeMax and Staples as well. (Plus any local/regional office supply stores in your area. They often have rebate offers for many of them.

I've not had any problems transporting fish long distances
(including moving a tank full of marines on a 4hr journey with no losses)

Most good lfs's will add oxygen to the bag if you tell them you have a long journey.

Thanks all.
Really appreciate the links and info on UPS strips, etc.
I am wondering what experiences people have had with mail ordering fish. I know it's done. But can't imagine what that journey does to the poor little guys. Anyone done this?

Meanwhile, I'll hang loose out here and just read, observe all your great fish tales, and learn... er... re-learn.
