well I did a change on my 42 tonight, afterwards I checked the nitrite for some reason, I was shocked to find it at .25, the tank only houses 5 fish & 2 snails. So I checked the tap water and it was at .75     , so now what...hold off on water changes until this passes? I noticed the tap was testing 1.0 ammonia last week....I'm confused

That's water contamination if its correct - I'd check with your water company.

same problem....
I called the water company last week and they acted like it was top priority and then I never heard back from them :sly:

I tested it tonight (tap) and it was 1.5  , BUT my tanks are due for their weekly so .......?

I'll call again tomorrow and raise heck, but in the meantime...should I just hold off on changes?

PLEASE aask them if they use chloramine to treat your tap water

this may be why only maybe i dont think it is but..the amount i found out about our drinking water is shocknig

andcheekout wots chloramine

so its got actualy dbl the amount since you last cheekd

chloramine contains more nitrite then chlorine to so they may use it

Just an idea - would you happen to have a spare filter for emergencies that maybe you keep in your main tank? If so, you could break down the ammonia and nitrite in your tap water by putting the filter into the bucket on its own and letting the beneficial bacteria break down the nitrite.

If you don't do this normally, maybe you should? Just a lump of filter floss would do - anything really that can be a portable source of beneficial bacteria.

In the meantime, I agree that this is awful. I've found dangerously high levels of nitrate in my water (75ppm) and I daren't test for phosphates - it's probably off the scale, but to date I've never discovered nitrite. We shouldn't have to run a batch of tests on our water before we dare use it!

I'm definitely saving for that RO unit - this is out of order!

anna wot is a ro2 unit i put a thread up asking no 1 replied

its cus there was 1 on ebay for 15 pound fully working says connect to tap ?
and filter water us this right

also
Chlorine in water kills fishes in consentration 0,2-0,3 mg/l. However, over 0,003 mg/l could causes toxic symtoms.

An RO unit is a Reverse-Osmosis unit. It's similar to a water distillation unit - produces pure water from tap water. You have to add minerals etc. to it to make it suitable for your fish but lots of people swear by them.

If you've seen one for £15 on Ebay that's a bargain (or a con). The cheapest I've seen is £45 and most of them go for £100+ and have to be plumbed in.

hmmm, chloramine contains nitrite? That's wild and also explains soooo much. I could barely understand the guy on the phone from the water company, he had a very heavy accent and we weren't communicating well at all. But he did say something about chloramine/nitrite being one in the same.

He also said that he was told to tell people inquirying about the water quality for fish tanks that.....the water was intended for human consumption, not for fish! uhhhm  , it's not good for the fish but suitable for people? -_-
Crazy

I lost one of my favorite fish a few weeks ago....she died before my eyes as I poured clean water into the tank, I was aware that her species was sensitive to chloramine and unaware that my then current dechlorinator didn't remove chloramine :X , the amount in my tap water must be disgustingly outrageous

The filter contraption is a good idea Anna, I'll have to figure some way of going about that. Maybe I'll pick up a HUGE rubbermaid tub tomorrow and filter it in that. I use ro water in my 50 but none of the other tanks  , maybe I should consider investing in an ro unit myself :/

Thanks for the link f&c's, I'm going to check out that article right now ;)

wuvmy I LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE YOU

LOLOLOL FOR 24 HOURS I DIDNT GO BED TRYING TO WARN PPL ON CHLORAMINE ITS VERY TOXIC TO FISH

HIGH CONTENTS OF NITRITE = BAD NITRITE IN TAP WATER

BUT WE WOULDNT KNOW THIS CUS IT DOESNT EFFECT US WE WOULD ONLY WORRY OR TRY FINDING OUT IF IT MADE US HUMANS ILL TO

but well WOT WE DONT KNOW DONT HURT (ITHINK IT DOES)!!!

the problem i have found is that PPL really no nothing about chloramine not being rude but why should they they didnt know its there

THATS WHY IM HERE TO SAVE THE DAY HEHEHE smiles

but my conditionare does NOT take chloramine out :( wot i do well

i get water in 2 litr bottles leave them wiht the lid off for 1 week in the sun AND WATH THE RUBBISH LEAVE THE WATER i tell you 4 days you will see millions of bubbles this must be chloramine

i have also rung the council and water comapny

THEY STATE WE ARE LIKE BT WE PROVIDE A SERVICE FOR 1 THING

BT PROVIDES YOU WITH A PHONE LINE FOR FONE CALLS NOT INTERNET
SO WHEN IT GOES WRONG DONT MOAN lolol lolol but well its truee bt say this i rang them

they say its not a modem line but for voice fax calls thats wot you pay for
by gettng 56k your just speeding up bandwidth on your line not chaniing it same with adsl ??

and the water comapany say we provide humans with clean drinking bathing water

sumtimes there are problems with water but its the area which your from i.e MYSELF THE SEASIDE so i get alot of chalk
so they treat it even more then normal but is safe and fine to humans

we do not provide water for fishes as we know they have many diffrent need to a human

Oh how correct you are, another thng you should read up on when your in the mood to investigate is....flouride, the stuff in toothpaste and city water,it's pure death and probably the root to most cancer cases  ,very interesting stuff and needless to say....we've since began using a peroxide/baking soda mixture to brush with

I couldn't get that link to the article to work though :/ ,maybe it's me, I'll try again. I certainly appreciate all of your info :D

I'll call the water company back tomorrow as I was instructed to do....he told me to clean out my pipes  (duh they were clean...we use a LOT of water) but anyway, clean out the pipes and test again...so I did, and it was still terrible so they'll more than likely come out tomorrow and check it themselves. I don't care what they have to do...I want my water the way it was about a month go :grr: .
And if I have to I'll go knocking door to door to let people know what kind of water they're paying dearly for, surely something can be done..... -_- (hopefully)

ooops, missed your last post (I've done that a lot tonight  )

It's a shame that they see it as just a service, somehow it's more than that,it's providing life of a sort ,I'll betcha that none of the water company employees drink tap water :grr:

First, water plants use chloramine, because studies have shown that simply chlorine-gas could form compounds that causes cancer. So they don't want to use chlorine, and they use chloramine.

Chloramine is a difficult compound to aquarium hobbiests; Some chemicals remove chlorine but ammonium-ion stays. Usually biological filtration remove ammonia/ammonium-ion and there is no harm of that, but... If your water is basic, there is lot of ammonia. When pH is under seven, there cannot be ammonia, there is ammonium-ion then.

So filtration should be good, biological filtration rather than mechanical. Many filters are just more or less mechanical.

Chlorine in water kills fishes in consentration 0,2-0,3 mg/l. However, over 0,003 mg/l could causes toxic symtoms.

PAH = polyaromatic hydrogarbons, they are carsinogens that cause e.g. cancer.

my chloramine add

bio elite wot is chloramine

hope these help but I WARN YOU MAY START GETTING WORRIED LOL as i think a couple of ppl have like myself
