Hi im new to this and some of my fish seem to be gasping i think just done a nitrite text but dont really understand it and its a dark pink colour.

most nitrite test kits are about hte same. The lighter the colro the better. Well. Do a couple of water changes to bring hte nitrite down. It is a byproduct of the bacyteria that breaks down ammonia.

Is your tank cycled?? If so, get some Prime by seachem and do an emergency dose. If your tank isn;t cycled, then you jsut have to wait it out and add some bio-zyme or similar product to help boost the bacteria levels (read the package on how to use the cycling product)

The smallest aquariums such as a 10 gallon will take about 2 weeks. Test the water everyday and watch for nitrates and nitrite spikes. Then when the nitrate and nitrite and the ammonia are 0, you can safely add fish.

To help cycle, you could put some hardy fish such as feeder guppies in there to help give off ammonia for the bacteria to cycle.

Just bought my tank a week ago. This particular tank was already set up in my LFS. I bought the whole thing complete...gravel, live rock, live coral, damsel fish, used filters. I hear having all this will speed up the cycling process.

Started testing my water only 4 days ago. Since I started, Ammonia levels have dropped to 0, Nitrites are 0.9ppm but Nitrates are super high at 160 ppm. Should I be concerned or is this a normal part of the cycle?
