nitrite level off the chart!!!!!

OMG it was way to much. It probably made it worse. I would have let it sit and cycle. It might now kill your fish if there are any in it. Sorry fer the bad news. :byebye:

Da%^. I knew I should have asked first. Well, I guess we will just have to wait and see. I put him in a seperate container with some of the old water and am slowly adding new, so maybe he will be ok. I hope I hope. I guess if it happens again, I will leave it be. *sigh*

Well if they are in containers it is perfectly fine to do a 100% water change..

High nitrite levels indicate the peak of the cycle, you were almost done :X What's done is done and now you're back to square one (sheesh I've been reading too much Dr.Seuss).Twice weekly 100%er's or once weekly 25-50% Are you going to recycle?

GodricPuffer, he's in a filtered tank.
wuvmybetta, I wasn't trying to cycle cause I have read that it is hard to do with a 2.5G. I guess it's not as hard as they say, and it looks like a betta can survive it. I will start over and let it go again, and this time let it cycle though. I have been doing 25-35% twice weekly with all my tanks. I'm thinking of adding a dwarf frog in with him in the 2.5G. I'm gonna give it a good hiding spot though. Thoughts?

But yes, a 2.5 can certainly cycle
 Only certain size tanks cycle?
IME even 1 gallons can cycle :dunno: others say that's impossible :dunno:
I have several 1 gallons and they all have been through cycles... I have never experienced a tank not cycling actually.... I guess I can understand if the water or gravel was taken from an established tank, but not one on its own.

(I reread my post and decided I sounded lame and fixed it so it does make sense. YAY)

Yeah, I've heard people call it "impossible" - but no question, it is possible to cycle any size tank. Bacteria will colonize any way they can, and that includes tanks smaller than 2.5g. The biological basis for this isn't really questionable (which you, teckno and I know, wuv ;) ) but people will become convinced of anything.
