Nitrates in tap water

At 50ppm the average life of my fish was 12-24 months which meant I was replacing half of my fish every year :(
Oh no, I’m totally in love with my Betta and want him to love as long as possible!! Thank you I will have a look at the RO/tap water mix for the future and possibly try out the nitrate remover filter in the meantime!

Thank you everyone for your replies :good:

Don't forget that a tap/RO mix will also lower the GH, so you'll need to take that into account when choosing fish for the future 200 litre.

I have similar issues, all the tap water around me has quite high - my last house it was well over the legal limit of 50ppm but my new house seems to be between 20 and 30ppm. I've used a nitrate filter in the past which is something you can pre filter your water with when you do the water change, you have to run the water through it at a trickle to remove it so you need to plan accordingly. I used the Pozzani brand ones.

An other option would be to add some fast growing plants to your tank something like Pennywort or Hygrophila 'Siamensis 53B' really soak up nutrients. The Pennywort can be floating or you can plant as a stem like plant. Other floating plants would help as well and your Betta will like some of the long roots they send down :)

Wills :)
Where would one find a nitrate filter.
I, too, struggle with high nitrates, keeping my weight down, and fine lines around my eyes.

Hi all,
So my tap water has around 20ppm nitrates possibly slightly more, is this a problem? If so is there anyway to reduce it without spending a fortune! I recently had activated carbon and zeolite in my filter which reduced the nitrates. I was wondering can I run the tap water through zeolite or leave my water change water sitting for a few days with zeolite in it!
Do you get your fish from a local fish store? You may try asking them what they do since they probably have similar water to yours.

Fish stores won't do anything to remove nitrates. Shops need to sell fish as quickly as possible to make money so as fish are only there for a short time, shops don't bother spending money to cure a long term issue.

I purchased my fish online. My nitrates have reduced now that my plants have started growing and I’ve purchased the pozzani nitrate removal system for my tap water which I will be trying out at the next water change.

Hi everyone,

im looking for a little advice, I am about to do my first water change with the pozzani nitrate removal system, I have prepared a 50/50 mix of tap water and the filtered water. On testing my Levels it has reduced the nitrate to 5ppm which is great however my tank ph is around 7.5 (reading of 7.4 on high ph and 7.6 on normal ph) and the new water is around 7.2 possibly 7.0. Will this difference be okay? And how much water should I change first time? I normally do 25% (10 gallon tank).
Thank you for your replies.

Maybe see if you have one of these local to you?

Thank you, there is not one close atm,I didn’t even know these existed.... it looks like one is coming soon near me so I will definitely look into this!! Thanks again.

Don't forget Spotless Water is pure water not water with just nitrate removed. It's the same as using RO water so you would have to add remineralisation salts to keep the hardness the same as it is now.

The slightly lower pH after using the Pozzani filter is fine - assuming you have just the nitrate removing filter, not the everything removing filter as this one will drop your hardness to zero.

Oh okay, I have the no.10 fishlogic nitrate removal system, I will check the website to see if I can find out exactly what I’ve got! But the ph difference is okay if it is the right one? Thank you essjay ;)

I had that system and it does not affect pH. Any differences between your tap water and the tank likely already exist and should cause no issues.
