Apparently these contains micro-organisms in the sponge, even when completely dry! I was researching on the internet.

Juwel say to replace the sponge very 6-weeks for it to be effective.

What do peeps think about this? any experience?

I was under the impression that the bacteria that converts nitrate to a harmless gas requires an "oxygen free" environment, hence why Tetra Easy Balance and such products (that claim to reduce nitrate) CAN reduce nitrate but only under certain conditions.

I have used this sponge, but I cut it in half to put in a different filter and found the sponges secret! They contain a capsule of, well, I dunno, but I am guessing some sort of microorganisms. I am guessing that as the sponge gets wet the capsule dissolves releasing the microorganisms, which is how they can be transported dry. I was not really impressed by it though, just seemed a bit gimmicky? After all I would rather add a liquid containining nitrate reducing microorganisms. BUt if they work for you...!

Unless you have high nitrate in your tap water. Lots of plants is probably the best way imo :). Nitrate doesn't even register in my tank anymore (and funny enough the TDS reading of the water in my tank is lower then that from my tap!!).

Nitrate and phosphate removal sponges and the like very useful if you have high nitrate in your tap water, cant have plants or have a SW setup.
