Would it not be possible to partition off 150mm at the end of the tank with an acrylic sheet with holes in it and stick in a load of nitrate sponge type plants. I'm talking about the indestructable fast grower types (vallis etc.). Instant nitrate reactor!

maybe but im not giving up tank space for a bunch of girly plants
:D

i have done well with the way my tank is set for the last 10yrs so i dont realy need to change anything its just that now i have all the fish i have ever wanted in the same place at the same time

i wont need to speen any money on fish so thought i may as well do some thing new with the filteration

i always thought that nitrate was the end product of the cycle so with all the nitrate i have always had then surely my systerm is up to thew job as i have no amo no nitrite just nitrate

i added a sand bed filter a few weeks ago and saw a way of adding a nitrate filter into the loop

this is how my systerm runs

eheim pro3 x 2 both of which have a big pond bucket (big enought for a 3000gal pond) as pre filters
2 x eheim 2252 inturnals with polyfilter changed every 3 weeks (polyfilter is one of the best products i have used for years but it costs££££££)
and now 1 x shuran flow bed filter 100 should take care of a tank up to 2000L and the new nitrate filters

and before anyone says i should have a sump i have left space in the middle cab if my filters struggle when the fish get bigger for a aqua medic marin 1000

i dont like sumps they are to noice and smelly for my living room

I'm in the current dilema of planning the sump of my 10ft and although i'm trying to fit a few hundred litres of biological media I'm now thinking of blacking a section out and from the biological section and filling it with elodea densa heavily lit which will act as a nitrate reactor, I'm also planning on planting the tank out a bit aswell so hoping nitrates will be kept to a minimum.

my current set up with a weeks feeding nitrates soon rise even with 0ppm in the tap water.

Girly plants?! Fancy a scrap? Go to the planted tank forum or the marine forum and say that!
I know you're joking but I actually find keeping plants far more difficult than keeping fish healthy. A mixture of the two makes for a more complete, if more demanding, hobby IMO. To be honest the plant side of things can be a PITA sometimes. I have often tried something new only to end up with the biggest algae outbreak. My lovely tank turns into a green box in the corner of the room and blue green algae stinks!
The idea of a plantless tank is inviting except for the fact that my tank looks great when things are going well, I have never registered any nitrates, even after a 3 week water change interval (oops) and my current fish need the plants as cover.

Enjoy your 'manly' plantless, gadgety tank. :D
