Hello,

I have a pretty heavily planted 22G tank. The only occupants were 2 female swordtails and 1 male plus 2 bronze corys and 3 pretty big Neon Tetras(as far as big goes for these fish) I decided to get some colourful fish to highlight the plants in the background. I bought 12 small neons and all but 3 have gone. Is it possible they have been eaten by the swordtails or the Tetras? I have found a few remains.

Have checked all stats and they are all fine.

Is it possible to check for Neon Tetra Disease?

Thanks

Any neons anyone I know have kept all end up just disappearing, Really I dont know what it is, I think since they arent hardy, they die and then like dissolve an get sucked up in the filter.

disolved? no way. the hardiness of a fish makes no difference in how long it takes for the biomatter to dissolve. The cories probably ate a majority of the remains, and if the tank is heavily planted, there may be others you haven't dug out yet.

the tetras may be hiding as they can be shy when first put into an aquarium. However, they are not - as mentioned before - terribly hardy. Did you acclimatize them? If not that may be what killed them off, though being delicate they can sometimes die anyway. Do you know what your water stats are?

Thanks for the replys my stats are

PH - 6.9
Amm - 0
NItrite - 0
Nitrate -10ppm

They were also acclimatized on average i lost two per night.
I have not lost anymore in the past 36hrs so I still have 3 left plus the 3 jumbos.

Do Neons eat there own?

Thanks again.

It's unlikely swordtails would eat healthy neon tetras (though they aren't a good combination regardless, since swordtails need hard/alkaline water while neons need soft/acid). So, as a complete aside, you should really raise the pH of your aquarium if you want the swordtails to do well; 7.0-7.2 is fine, and will be enjoyed by Corydoras and in fact most community fish.

I simply don't believe that neons make good aquarium fish for beginners or even experienced aquarists, for the reasons elucidated here. It has been my experience that over the last 10 years the quality of neons has plummeted, and neon tetra disease has become virtually ubiquitous.

Cardinals are generally better value because they tend to be hardier and somewhat resistant to neon tetra disease. Failing that, there are lots of new species of small danio, rasbora, and rainbowfish that can fill the "little tetra" niche while being much less prone to myserious deaths.

Neons will indeed eat dead neons. This is the problem. Neon tetra disease spreads from the corpse to the healthy fish through this event. Hence, sickly fish must be removed and destroyed at once. There is no cure for neon tetra disease, and once you get it, unless you break the cycle, it will wipe out the entire school of neons as well as any other neons you add subsequently. Neon tetra disease is worst in neons, but lots of other fish can get it, including angelfish and goldfish!

Cheers,

Neale

Hello

I have just found out that i belive my neons have NTD. Hence the reason I think they have been disappearing. Two had lost a lot of there stomach looked very oddly shaped another had no red colour left and one is lying almost at a 45 degree angle. I have just found my treasured Bronze cory now dead. Can they also be infected by NTD.

Do I have to wipe the rest of the Neons out there is 4 left?

Have completed a 50% water change and checked the stats before and all seemed ok.

Can anybody please offer me any advice on the matter.

Do I have to empty the tank and start again?

Thanks.

I had a bout of NTD some time ago. What I did was to keep the healthy fish but any that showed symptoms were euthanised immediately. All 16 eventually died of it over the course of abot 18 months but none of my other fish contracted it. Hard to say if your cory was infected but it's certainly possible.

My other Bronze cory is also dead found it today, Everything has been wiped out apart from my 3 swordtails what are the best options for the tank?

Will there be a chance that the swordtails might go the same way and if so should I get rid of them?

Totally Gutted.

Thanks.
