Hey all,

Im thinking about converting to the salt side and swapping one of my tanks into a marine set-up been into my LFS today picked up some prices and what they recommend (trusted as a school friend works there), but nevertheless i have come to you the experts for some puker advice.

Really looking for ideas to what you guys would recommend from skimmers to substrate and how you guys do it?...

Sorry for all the seemingly dumb questions.. i have no marine equipment yet but as i say have full trop set-ups where do i start :p?

Thanks in advance,

Charlie

Ask Tons and Tons of questions!
It will help me out aswell, as im still learning.

Depending on what you want to keep makes all the difference to what you'll need...
Most important is good quality live rock and enough pumps to circulate your water up to 20x per hour..or more, depending on eventual stock..
Live sand is also beneficial although not esential...
Also lighting will depend on what you hope to keep..if going reef strong lighting is a must...not so important in a fish only system.

Thanks for the replies... Yeah ive been reading a few of the journals and been taking alot in, also ive been already using the pen and pad system and scrawling everywhere!, so yeah im learning lots of stuff already.

One question i do have which could be deemed horrendously stupid is is de-ionised water ok to use in a tank ive read somewhere before that it is and ive sold it too many people who claim to be using it in a tank set-up?

Thats gd to know, as i may well use de-ionised to start with and get a RO filter t change it over time?

If i were to convert my 2ft tank into a marine set up would it be easy enough to later transfer it into a 6ft tank once i have experience with marines?

Im just enquiring as im unsure as to the procedure of moving/relocating corals.

Sorry for hijacking your thread.

Many thanks in advance for any replies

DI water is fine. It comes down to costs. An RO/DI unit maybe cheaper over time. The best thing..as said above...is to review the FAQ's...read a few journals...and then scribble down a plan for your own. You'll probably get a lot of feedback by listing your equipment and how you plan to set up vs. the 'open question' method.

Welcome aboard.

Thanks SH and yeah myself and a friend of mine are converting both at same time, i keep telling him to join up to the forum but he is one of those lazy net users :p

Ive been scrawling on a pad since months back when the thought first crossed my mind.. The DI water would be cheaper for me to start as i can get it for literally pennys and im on the look out for a unit as i think that it will be cheaper in the long run.. when im at home im gonna get full dimensions of the tank that will be in use, and list what ive purchased/have already for it and then see where to go from there as i have a mental sketch of how i think or want the tank to look. Ill just be hoping to continue in picking you knowledgable peoples brains!

Cheers
