Newbie Alert! Number Of Guppies To Number Of Gallons

I've decided to set up a guppy tank after the death of my betta. I have a tall 3.5g hex tank that has a mirror at the back, it will have a hang on filter and a heater - possibley will be planted with java fern...

So just wondering how many male guppies can I have in this setup? I don't want any females because I don't want babies, because my filter will suck them up and also because i have no place to put babies.

Darn it, i wanted 5 because 5 is a good number. Only then 4 it is.

i was also wondering what colours fancy guppies come in. I want a green one, a yellow one, a pink/red one and a blue one? Do these colours exist? and are they common?

You can get many diffrent colors of guppies, you will find probably most colors on males

If you have a good filter on the tank and keep up with frequent water changes, you will get away putting 5 in there

I put 4 to be on the safer side

Can you get guppies that are just one colour, or will you always have mixed e.g. spots, stripes (normal pet shop-wise, I'm not going to bid on fish online). I have the aquaone clearview 100 hang on filter, i think it can do 80L/min, how frequent are you talking about - like every day? ohhh i want 5 guppies, but if 5 puts them in danger, than 4 will have to do.

You will be fine with 5, do 15% water change every 4-5 days, that will keep the tank nice and clean

You can get guppys all one colour yes, its just finding them, well actually you will find thier body is one colours, but the fins are all the same color like a nice red tail one.. its just finding them.

yay, so excited also (random crazy question), if i'm currently cycling a tank now, can I just move over the sponge from the cycled tank filter, to the new tank and put it in the filter there? And if i move the sponge out of the cycled tank...do I have to recycle that tank?

Remove some of the filter media to your new tank, and this should help cycle the tank quicker..

Someone else will have to answer you on this one as i am not very experienced in the whole water cycle department

I've also been looking for a green cobra guppy. If you find one, I'd love to see pictures of it! We plan on letting nature run it's course on our females and then dominate our tank with male guppies. Their colors are stunning! The yellow and blue males are very pretty too. You should also look at lyretail guppies. Very pretty!

In terms of the numbers, I think you should consider space as well as filtration / water quality. They are quite active fish, I think that 5 would do better in a bigger tank. I had 4 in a 5-6g hex and moved them into the bigger tank eventually, they did so much better in there and are always swimming around the whole space. You might also have more issues with aggression if they are crowded. You also need to bear in mind the space available for gas exchange in a tall tank and the fact that they are primarily top / middle dwellers. IMO 3.5 is not enough room for 5.

Hmmm...are guppies large waste producers? I went to the fish shop today and wow they are tiny little things but cute as heck - I always thought they were betta size. Anyway I went to the pet store in the first place to get a second opinion. They said I could get away with 10 guppies...in a 3.5g hex tank...Which is double of what 5teady suggested. I also noticed that they had a 10g tank with lik heaps and heaps of guppies in it...why is that?

the tank will definately be planted, with a hang on filter that filters 100L/hr I think it suits tanks up to 50L...or something forgot. the filter does biological, chemical and mechanical filtration, and will most likely do partial water changes twice a week.

I need more opinionssss, i'm freaking outt
