I setup a new tropical aquarium around 4 weeks ago. It Juwel 800 capacity of 110 litres. In the first 3 weeks when ever I changed the water I added Tetra Aqua Safe and Aqua Safe Start. Last time when I changed the water I added Prime instead of Aqua Safe and and some amout of Api Stress Zyme.

I found one Guppie dead the next day morning and noticed another one is mostly at the water surface or near the filter. Since I added the fishes I lost 3 Guppies and male sword tail as he got fungus. One guppy died today when I noticed closely I can see that it was swollen from one place.

Today morning I noticed that female Sword tail has white spots. I immediately checked the water quality and found PH 8.2, Nitrite is 0.25 ppm, Nitrate is 10 ppm and Ammonia at 0.50 ppm. I changed around 40% of water and used Tetra Aqua Safe and Prime also added some Api Stress Zyme and Teta Easy Balance. Increased the temperature to 28 C and added aquarium salt.

Any suggestions that what is going wrong as i am new to this and have no past experience of fish keeping.

i recon that all the tetra stuff was doing is taking away the ammonia but not actually cycling the filter, this may be why you could have got an ammonia spike when you started using api?

I'd go back to what ever it was you were using, test and w/c regularly and remember next time

ALWAYS FISHLESS CYCLE!!!

Hi welcome to the forum :) By the sounds of it you are in a fish in cycle situation which means that your filter is still developing enough bacteria to cope with the amount of waste your fish will produce.

The basics of it are if you have any level of Ammonia or Nitrite in your tank you need to do a water change as these two chemicals are poisonous to fish. The Nitrate is at a safe level though :)

With the white spots, turn your heater upto 30c and the heat could kill it off by its self, a good medicine to use is Protozin by Waterlife just be careful not to overdose the tank if you are doing water changes regularly.

Out of all the chemicals you are using you only really need to use 1 of them which is the dechlorinator - I have to admit Im not familiar with any of those products you listed I have always used API Stress Coat but it will say on the bottle.

oh dear, the sewlling is probably dropsy which is influenced by a bacterial infection caused by poor water quality stressing the fish. Sounds like you arent having much luck, neither am i. I'm currently fighting off ich, finrot, mouthrot, slime and velvet after some snaild died and polluted the water :'(

Your loss of fish are due to your filter not handling the load, ammonia & nitrite need to be zero,so large waterchanges until you have these readings, any amounts of these 2 will poison the fish...

You are adding far to much to your tank, you dont need stress zyme, prime & aqua safe,i personally use prime has this is more concentrated than the others and more economical to use.Tetra easy balance is another product that won't be much use. This is a product put on the market to so called keep the nitrate levels down therefore supposely leading to less w/c.I would bin that personally, the best way is weekly waterchanges, once your filter has cycled and can handle the bio load of the fish.

What fish stock have you got?,adding aquarium salt is not always the answer and some fish like corys etc cannot tolerate it.

Have a read in the beginners section(link under my siggy pic) this will tell you about the fish in cycle you are in,w/c's are the best way to go my friend to keep the readings for ammonia/nitrite at zero :good:

Harlequins. I started with 5 guppies and 2 sword tail. In the first week male sword tail died because of fungus and 1 guppie had a swallowing on the body it was like a small bubble. 2 other guppies just died, so at the moment i have one female sword tail and two guppies, from which sword tail and one guppie is infected with white spot. Any suggestions???

One more guppie just died. For white spot i am using Protozine from yesterday as it is 4 days course can i change the water during the course. Just checked the ammonia level its 0.25 ppm. Any suggestion what should i do as i just got one guppie and one sword tail left that has white spots.

Keep water changing...

You'll need to top up the meds so they're not 'watered down', so make sure you do a volume of water change that'll make it easy to work out how much you need to add to your new water.

+1

Whats your heater on at the mo?

That's quite hot for the fish you have, they'd be more comfortable at around 24°C
