Hi all, as you can see im new to the forums. I've been reading about nano tanks here for the last couple of days, I must say the forums are very informative. :good: Also been reading a couple of aquarium books and think my next tank is going to be a nano. Never done SW before :S Just FW with two goldfish that live in a Juwel 60. This fish keeping seems to be adictive tho

Anyway im planning to be ready to start my Nano tank by Christmas time, which will I hope give me enough time to plan and research.

First thing is to decied what tank im gonna use. Now im split between two options;

1; Use my "Goldfish bowl"
2; Buy a all in one Nano Tank, maybe a nanocube.

Would it be possible to use my goldfish bowl ? Is it to small? would the fact that its round be a problem?

Personally I'd rather use the bowl as it looks very nice in its surroundings but I wouldnt want to shoot myself in the foot and go with that option if I cant make it work.

Yes you guessed right the goldfish started out in the bowl! Thinking it would be far harder to up grade the Nano 6 months down the line, so need to make the right choice at the start.

Anyway what do you think, would a Goldfish Bowl be able to support a Nano Reef ?

The size of the bowl is about 20 liters (I think, need to check) How does that work out in Gallons ?

Thought i could maybe use a heat mat to save space. (haven't been able to find many being sold for aquarims tho?)

Then a six inch skimmer should fit without to many problems.

That would just leave me with sorting out water circulation right? If I can fit all that in without to much water displation it should be ok ? Or is it a lost cause should I not be thinking I can make a Nano Reef out of my bowl ?

Many thanks for all the advice! :good:

5g is way to small for even a single fish

& a tank that small as a 1st marine tank is IMO a bad idea

Thats that idea out the window then. Thought that might be the case, how about if I managed to get hold of a larger bowl maybe 20+gallons would that be ok ?

Im thinking about having a couple of clown fish a anemones and maybe something like a goby.

Whats with the bowl idea I hear you say lol; We have a round mirror on the wall and the Nano Reef will be under it. Would look fantastic being round.

Forget the anenomes, they have no chance in a nano, you can get some toadstool corals that look very similar though and will get on fine in a 20G.

Other than that, the plan sounds good, just read as much as you can and take it nice and slowly.

Yup think im gonna have to hold of on the SW aquarium for now, gonna try a tropical setup and maybe in a few years once we have more room i can get my teeth into reefs. :)

Navvarre's wife (or him) had a biorb marine from my recolection. It is doing well. I hate curved glass but thats all individual taste.
