New To Fish Keeping - Please Help

I love a good success story! I pray for a speedy and full recovery

Thank you but i don't think he's out of the woods yet! Still a long way from the strong graceful fish he was.

Luckily he's also quite tame and doesn't seek shelter upon seeing me.

I crumbled a bit of flake food around where he is in the hope that something goes down his mouth while he's up there gulping. Hopefully him moving about will also help him get rid of any trapped wind.

Just wanted to give an update. He was swimming this morning with all his fins out. Went topsy turvy for a bit but is now able to hold himself the right way up. It put the lights on for the other fish as they have been off for a while and he has gone to his little hiding place to rest up. It think he is looking much better than he was last night and he is curious about whats happening outside the tank.

Although he is more active i notice that the base of his tail is now red and bit seem to be coming off. I have read about fin rot and wonder if this is it! He has gone upside down again but i will try and take a photo.

I have bought some aquarium salt, it is by SUPA and is labelled as TONIC SALTS, can i use this to make him better? The other fish are not showing any of these signs.

It looks really sore but has just manifested in the past few of hours. Poor guy is suffering from one thing after another!

Api Stress coat and Api Stress Zymes are in the post and should get here soon. I could not find any local suppliers so i have ordered on ebay. But in the meantime i need to do something.

I can do a water change but the whole water was new on Saturday night. Do you think if i get rid of all the water and use the Aqua Safe on the new tap water it will sort out the problem or should i change say 1/3rd of the tank tomorrow and 1/3rd the next day and once again on Friday. I am worried about further stressing the fish by removing them and putting them back into new water.

Thanks for replying, if you hadn't i was considering dissolving some salt and adding, half of the recommended amount of 1 teaspoon per 5 liters.

well ALWAYS use the aqua safe on tap water,firstly...
Personally,I'd go for your 1/3,1/3,1/3 method,I wouldn't change all the water in one go,as bang goes your good bacteria...
And that aqua salt has been around since the dark ages, and I'd avoid using it if it was me...

Does your lfs sell reverse osmosis water? that's water that's been filtered and treated to take all the chlorine and nastys out and can go straight into the tank.

Good luck, and roooting for the little fella! :good:

They hardly have anything. I have gone to one further out but their products are not the usual brand ones so i am cautious about getting them.

I shall have a look around for osmosis water and if i can't find it then i will see if i can sort some sort of machine out for it. Do you know if the BRITTA filters for drinking water would work. I can get one tomorrow with a few spare cartridges and start purifying some water. It will take a while but it may be a good solution. What do you think?

You don't need to go the RO route, unless you want to spend that kind of money forever. Your fish need some of the minerals in the water you have. You also don't need to change all the water at once. I'd suggest a 50% water change right away, then see how things go. Maybe another 30% water change in a day or two.

I would also suggest getting StressCoat+ or Seachem Prime to dechlorinate the water as they also remove heavy metals. That's really all you need for treating the water.

Also, if you did change all the water, that wouldn't affect your good bacteria, as that is housed in your filter media, not the water itself.

Well this morning the redness doesn't seem to have gotten worse. I added a new rock cave for him to hide in an the loach has repossessed it.

He is a the bottom but is the right way round and I also noticed that the water has gotten clear overnight. He was quite alert and immediately came up to the glass to see me when i came into the room. I will monitor him closely again today and change some of the water. As the syphon has still not arrived i will take it from the top of the tank unless this is bad!

That's fine! And good news on his behavior! Please keep us posted ...

I have got some parts together to assemble a water butt. Had been meaning to do it for rainwater to water plants with. Can i use rainwater in the tank without having to dechlorinate? I dont think the rain is too acidic here but can't say for sure without collecting some and testing it but at least it should be free from chlorine.

Also would Stresscoats ability to restore protective slime mean that it could also protect against fin rot?

The Stress Coat + has just arrived. Does anyone know if its okay to add it to the tank straight away considering that it already had Aqua Safe. I could do a partial water change say 20 liters and put double the dosage ie 5ml for 20L as it says "Double the dosage to replace slime coat and to repair damaged skin and fins." I have added a few tall plants as well so it could be a good chance to get this water up to scratch. New heater also arrived as well as ornaments. What a lucky day, i just hope its lucky for Poseidon as well!

Go ahead and do a 50% water change. Your water can never be too clean. Then go ahead and double dose the StressCoat if you want.

Thank you! I'll do it right away! Does the product work instantaneously or do I need to give it time to do its thing? Gosh! I'm so nervous now!
