Can anyone suggest a floating plant that is easy to care for and possible sources to obtain it? The only stores I seem to have in my area are Petco and Petsmart.

I know next to nothing about aquarium plants, but I have a dwarf gourami and I want to give him the best possible home. My understanding is gouramis do best with heavily planted tanks and floating plants. The tank is a ten gallon.

Would floating plants adversely affect the plants below as far as light levels go? Is there a type of plant at Petsmart that I could get and just let float around the tank instead of getting a specific "floating" plant? That's probably a dumb question, but as I said, this is my first fish keeping experience and I never thought I'd be messing with live plants.

Most stem weeds can be used as floating plants but I believe the most popular for floaters are Egeria Densa, Duckweed, Amazon frogbit, Elodea canadensis and some others but they're probably the easier ones to source.

Unfortunately my Dwarf gourami's are responsible for killing my amazon frogbits. They stripped the roots aparts causing them to melt, now I grow them in another tank and transfer the matured ones to the big tank to be destroyed but used as surface protection. Once they begin to rot I remove them, not the perfect scenario but the gouramis seem to love them more than any other floater in my tank.

Indian fern is another good floating plant, i keep it in my discuss tank as well as my rio 400 with some sverums in, they like to eat it from time to time, but it grows back so fast that i hardly notice it's gone. Are you in the uk? if so i could post you some if you cover postage

Thanks so much for the very kind offer, but I'm in the US unfortunately.

Hi, I just bought some Glass Bloodfin Tetras and completely forgot to buy the floating plants that I meant to whilst I was there.
Is a few anacharis ok for them? Or do the need a more dense shelter?
Thanks.
