New To Fish Keeping, My Big Journal

you must buy cured live rock or its useless to you. you can buy it from a reefer breaking down a tank very cheaply, and you may get some live sand too. just make sure it stays wet on the journey home. i suggest you join ultimate reef :good: some bargains may crop up on there.

a good skimmer would be either the TMC v2 120 (£50 new) or the TMC v2 400 (£50 second hand on ebay) theyre both made by the same brand but have a slightly different design, but the 400 would do a better job of removing DOC's and proteins

errr..... well, it all depends, you can buy uncurred rock if you have time to cure it yourself - which is easy :good: but most people buy cured to save time - as Truck said the best thing to do is find a reefer breaking down a tank and buy their lr and sand, much cheaper, I certainly would not buy lr from a lfs :good:

In fact you could buy everything second hand if you don't mind waiting for a bargain to come along, could be fun and I for one would enjoy hearing about your bargain finds

I think I might do that :good: , I'm not in a rush to spend my money. I'll keep you up to date.

This could get messy, we are all chasing the bargains, lets hope we don't start biding against each other :crazy: :rofl:

Sharm it is a good idea to say where you are from, then if anyone finds a bargain that would be good for you, in your area they can let you know :good: Just update your profile

whats everyone's veiw's on second hand tanks? I've been looking at some and they look good.

Nothing wrong with second hand tanks at all. Alot of people on here buy them.

If they are the type where everything is included such as Orca etc, just post on here and people will tell you how suitable they are for marine as they may be a tropical version and you may need to but a bit of extra equipment.

Yes, no problem with second hand tanks at all, and there are some real bargains to be had again :nod:

Second hand tanks can be absolute bargins, or absolute lemons. You realy want to know what you are looking at beofre you get one, or better still, take an experienced fish keeper along to act as help :good:

Key things to watch;

Seals. At they discoloured, pealing or developing algea underneath them? If so, leave it

Structure. When outward perssure is applied to the front and back glasses when the tank is empty, do the pains move? If so, leave it, or drive it down to vertually free. Damaged structural silicone is a tank re-build job for repairs... Are there any chips, cracks or deap scratches? If so, leave it, or drive the price down to virtually free. Deep scratches are algea magnets and a royal PITA in a set-up. Chipped or cracked pains will need replacement... All brace bars present and in good nick? If so great, if not, drive the price down low or walk away, as they will need replacing.

There are a few things that can catch you out if you are not shure what you are looking at with tanks, but if you know what you a looking for, you can get "bargain basement" prices for very good gear.

All the best
Rabbut
