Hi, i've been looking to start a FOWLR,

but first of I was looking to buy a 125litre tank, how much should one cost? (dont want to get ripped off)

and can anyone give me a list of equipment i need, and a est cost? (i've looked on different web site and they are all slightly different)

Thanks

hi and :hi: to the salty side - may I suggest you do a search on this forum as many people have already gone before you setting up similar sized tanks :good: you will porbably find a complete set up list

Thanks ive had a look around and found some good advice.

I've been looking at is http://www.aquariumsdelivered.co.uk/catalo...net-p-2713.html
for £190, would you say that is a decent price?

which comes with this
Fluval 3 PLUS filter
2 x 24" 20 watt GLO fluorescent lighting
150 watt Fluval Tronic heater
Nutrafin Care Pack (LCD thermometer,100ml Nutrafin Aqua Plus & Cycle. 26g Nutrafin Tropical Flake food).

with 10kg LR and that filter, will that be enough filtration?

ok, that tank is set-up for tropical - if you going to keep fish only (and I bet you will not want to after a short time!) then the t8 lights are ok, however I would be looking for a tank with at the least t5s so if you change your mind you can keep softies and a few hard corals.

you don't need a filter as you intend to have lr (look for a reefer breaking down a tank), you will require approx 1 lb a gallon, your tank will be about 26 gallons, so you will need at the least 26 lbs of lr or 12 kgs, would probably recommend approx 15 kgs

ps just had a quick look around and if you are stuck on having a new tank of that size what about the juwel lido ? has t5 lighting - all according what sort of money you want to pay, there are a lot of second hand bargains out there at the moment :kana: must admit I would not buy a new tank myself now

the rio 125 would be a better choice...its shallower and has stronger lighting. and will cost £200, just make sure you rip out the internal as they are nitrate factories because theyre hard to clean.

I like the looks of the rio 125,
So with that I would also need to get:
Powerhead
Live Rock
Protein skimmer (not sure if i need that?)
Hydrometer

is that right?

instead of a hydromter get a refractometer.

you will need test kits, salt, power heads equating to 3000lph, coral sand, heater, some form of phosphate remover, foods, RO unit or water from your LFS

anything ive missed people will fill in.

Ensure that you get Rowaphos and not a cheap phosphate remover. It is false economy and the aluminium oxide leached out by the cheap ones will prevent some corals from opening.

I know you say now that you want fowlr, but believe me, it becomes very addictive and you will want corals in no time.

The 3000lph? this is better to have one at 3000lph or 2x 1500lph?

2*1500 or 3*1000

thanks for all the help up to know, what protein skimmer do you recommend? (a cheap one)
and would cured LR be better to get then uncured? I was just looking at saving some money with uncured?

you must buy cured live rock or its useless to you. you can buy it from a reefer breaking down a tank very cheaply, and you may get some live sand too. just make sure it stays wet on the journey home. i suggest you join ultimate reef :good: some bargains may crop up on there.

a good skimmer would be either the TMC v2 120 (£50 new) or the TMC v2 400 (£50 second hand on ebay) theyre both made by the same brand but have a slightly different design, but the 400 would do a better job of removing DOC's and proteins

errr..... well, it all depends, you can buy uncurred rock if you have time to cure it yourself - which is easy :good: but most people buy cured to save time - as Truck said the best thing to do is find a reefer breaking down a tank and buy their lr and sand, much cheaper, I certainly would not buy lr from a lfs :good:

In fact you could buy everything second hand if you don't mind waiting for a bargain to come along, could be fun and I for one would enjoy hearing about your bargain finds
