my new 60g is on the kicthen counter i am thinkin of keeping it there but i need to know if it will be able to take the weight....its about an inch think at one end there is a cupboard supporting the weight...and the other end has a metal leg and also wooden supports screwd into the wall im really worried about the weight its going to at least 500 + pounds with everything inside im guessing..will this be enough....or can i reinforce it in some way say...putting a full lenght (from counter top to floor) piece of wood at the end and in the middle next to cupboard..will this add anymore strenght to the top???

edit - forgot to mention the tank only takes up 3/4 of the top so just a bit more than half is supported by the cupboard.

All-Glass lists a full 65 gallon weighing 775lbs. full. Add some rocks, heater, hood, & the rest of the tank gear, you will come in around 800lbs.

One of the things that worries me is the metal leg. If it's cheaper tubular metal, you may have a problem. If it's wrought iron, it's probably ok.

Make sure the edges of the tank are supported all the way around. This is what holds the weight. The center provides no support on newer tanks. You can check by trying to slide a piece of paper under the edges when it's on the counter. If you can fit paper under anywhere, the counter has a warp or bow. You can fix this with a thin piece of foam under the tank.

If the counter is not level, the tank will not be. You may have to adjust the metal leg some how.

The full length vertical supports will help if you are worried about strength. If you want to find out for sure, get 4 200lb. friends to sit on it, & move around a little. If it seems to move at all, reinforcement is needed.

thanks for that..im going to add full lenght supports and foam sheets under the tank as the counter is sloping an all so tiny bit to the left...so that shuld distrubute the weight....

add two support tubes at the end of the tank (one at the front, one at the back)
even then I think you may have a problem :dunno:

are you saying its bowing...well if u are its not....that pic looks weird..its brand new...and very straight? and wot granite???

im thinkin of adding 1 more metal leg.....and 3-4 full length wooden supports around the underneath....

the whole lot is tilting to the left... or the picture is wonky :)

do you have a spirit level?

Oh and by granite - he means the 'granite effect' worktop.

hehe...my picture is very wonky..bad photo taker i should have thought about that..but i just point and click :p

yea ive checked witha spirit level....

I would be very leery putting it there. I would keep thinking that it would tip to the left. I would either make a wooden box that fits under the the counter top to support the other half, or put a table leg under at each corner.

thanks for help..its going to move now...have a few ideas where it can go...sooo ill c....
