Hey,

I've decided to get myself a freshwater aquarium, and after some research, i've opted to get myself an Askoll pure l tank. This tank's dimensions are 56cm x 36 cm x 43,5, so I can only assume, it's about 86 litres (about 22 gallons).

I was wondering if this tank could fit 5-6 danio rerios, 5-6 neon tetras, a male and female dwarf gourami, and possibly some shrimps.

Thanks in advance!

hi there,

your tank is not really big enough for the danios to be honest. they need quite a bit of swimming space. there is plenty of choice for a tank this size though so do a bit more research and maybe come up with some alternative suggestions. post them up here and we will try to help. it is good that you are going to keep your tetras in a group. they should be kept in groups of 6+. i reckon the neons may disappear a bit in a tank your size so either think of upping the numbers or perhaps consider cardinals instead. (they are slightly bigger) the rest sounds fine though. have a look at the beginners section on here and read up on how to cycle your tank etc.

good luck and hope to hear how you are getting on and what you decide on. any other questions, feel free to ask!!

Thanks, mate!

Know pretty much all there's to know about cycling, just need to decide which fishes to pick! So difficult, because I like them all :). Any suggestions? I've read that the dwarf Gouramis should be kept in pairs, that's correct, right?

Thanks!

i am not too sure on the gourami to be honest as i have never kept them but i reckon you are right about keeping them in pairs. since you are thinking of keeping them as a sort of centre piece fish, how about thinking of another shoal of schooling fish? maybe harlequins or another type of tetra? shrimps are cool. corys also work well and are very entertaining (groups of 6+ though and prefer sand as a substrate).

just a few ideas for you!!

If you are keeping the gourami as a pair make sure its a male and a female as 2 males will fight, And they dont really need to be in a pair.
I would add the gourami last as their really sensitive to immature tanks.

Thanks to you two for the help.

Would it be fine if I had:
-A male and female dwarf Gourami
-6 neon tetras
-6 harlequin rasboras
-Several shrimps.

Would it be possible to add any kind of cichlid (my sister really likes them), and if so what kind stays small?

Thanks!

if you keep 1 male with 1 female, the male will almost certainly harrass the female, probably to death. You need at least two females to each male to spread the males 'attentions'

Well over the years Ive kept them in pairs and they were fine, they stayed together, maybe your experiences were different but In my case the male was good.

So I'll go for 6 neon tetras, 6 harlequin rasboras, and 2-3 dwarf gourami in this aquarium: http://tinyurl.com/btcauso

Now, I know how to cycle etc., but had some questions: can i put in the plants and wood etc right away or should i first let it cycle?
And what's the best substrate? Really like the look of sand, but unsure whether it's good for plants (and i want lots of plants).
