hi im going to get a 30 gal tank regular and get rid of my 30 tall. i would move the ones from the tall to the regular one. the new regular tank i want to make a nice planted community tank. i wasnt sure if this should go under this topic but, i was planning on making layers in the gravel. first soil, fertilizer, fine gravel, bigger rock gravel. would that layer thing work? and i just wanted to know if there is a good type of rainbow fish i could get for that tank that wouldnt be over crowded. (i think i could get them cheaper than most other places). i was going to make it a dwarf puffer tank but now i have made one communtity tank and now i want another. the rainbow fish would also have to be able to live with cardnal tetras. would angle fish be aggressive? and could angle fish also live in a 30 g?
these are the fish i want:
couple angle fish
school of cardnal tetra
rainbow fish (1or more)
cory's
algae eater

is this a good setup???

It'd be better to stick with the tall for angel fish. They need a tank about 18" high at their adult size. Rainbowfish would be okay with cardinal tetras, many types prefer faster flowing water and need plenty of swimming room. They would do better in groups of at least 3. What species of rainbow fish are you after- their sizes vary quite a bit and would affect what number you could have. :D

i want to get the neon rainbows, i got 2 for free today cuz it was my b-day so i had to get them today for a discount. there are temporaly in my 20 gallon

Angel fish will eat Cardinals as soon as they are large enough.
