This is a tank a bought at the weekend (for a reasonable £7.50).

It is a 14x8x8 with a 4mm gap at the bottom of the divider. I decided against having a filter section being built in because I thought it was a bit over the top for the tank size.

I was looking into building my own sponge filter, but honestly, I don't understand how they work. Air stones are being used all over the place and powerheads or airpumps..
I have a hagen mini elite normal filter but I think it is far too powerful for this small tank. My poor fish would run out of energy.

It's basically going to be used as a hospital/quarantine tank with 1 fish in each section at any one time. I just really need some advice as to what filter system to use, with obviously only 2 fish in at any one time, it isn't exactly going to have a fast build up of bacteria.

Any advice much appreciated.

a spnge filter simply works by getting a tube sticking it in the middle of the sponge about halfway through, putting an air stone in it.... that way it sucks the tank water through the sponge and pushes it out through the top of the tube there pretty easy to make imo

EDIT: nice tank btw a bargain at that price

I will have a go at creating one this weekend. If it's successful I will post up pictures :look:
Though having to buy a air pump (or such like) for the airstone hopefully won't be too costly!
