ive decided to buy a new 55 galon tank becasue my 8 gallon was not exactly the best choice for saltwater, lol

but annyway i was wondering if there was annything roung with having lots of little fish rather that 4 or 5 big fish . if so i would get a couple of damsels, 2 clowns, a purpel grama, a small blue hippo tang, small yellow tang and maby a foxface rabit fish. B)

Your tank would be an inadequate size for either of the Tangs - Juvenile or Adult

Maybe a bit small for a Rabbit as well

Agreed, a 55 is too small for tangs sadly :(. Its pretty much the lower limit for a foxface. You probably could squeeze one in there, but it might be a tight fit. Also, never put a foxface in the same tank as a yellow tang... The two fight and usually the tang dies. There's nothing wrong with having lots of smaller fish instead of a couple larger ones. In fact I think it looks cooler that way :)

ok well the yellow tang was not on my "must have list" but do you think a hippo tang would do ok? i planed to get one of them that was like 1-2 in. and have plenty of rocks. i hered hippo tangs just like to swim in long long lines and though rocks and stuff :fun: i really want to add a hippo though..........

I think it would be alright for a year, perhaps... though bigger is better for Tangs, people do tend to overexaggerate their needs sometimes.

oh great, guess what  as soon as i say i dont want a yellow tang www.saltwaterfish.com is selling them for $1.99! whith my luck............... ;)

Thats bad though. Now people will buy them because they are cheap and yellow, not knowing what its needs are, or quite frankly dont care, because it was only a couple of bucks. (Anyways, backs off rant stage).

Lost of small fish are awsome. You can get some real characters, and lots of them! :good: Big to medium fish are nice, but as said, space is your only limiting factor, so you cant have that many.

If you want the Hippo Tang, it would work, but only temporarily. You would need to either sell it or upgrade. Keep that in mind! :D

$1.99 for a yellow tang?! :hyper: They cost $120AU here!

On the blue tang - if you can find one at about 1 inch he might be alright in a 55 for a year or so.

Have a look at a Tangs body shape, this shows they are built for speed & swimming a 55 gallon will simply not do, especially for a Hippo Tang even a Juvenile

I you want to keep a Tang in proper health then they need a decent sized tank with a lot of swimming space

I believe that most people, especially new keepers underestimate the need for space when keeping Tangs

How do you come to that conclusion

Ive herd they are one of the quickest growing tangs. Tbh i think to buy a fish that you know it wont be happy when it gets older is not worth it cos if u dont go bigger you have to get rid of it and well thats hard when u grow to like the fish. So i wouldnt bother.

But on the PLUS side of things a 55 is great size to house small- med fish in a easy way, its easy to keep compared to ur 8 lol, and there is loads of space to create a colourful reef.
Cos imo i find having a tank with only a few fish and loads of corals makes the tank look constantly interesting cos it aint like freshwater everything moves ish, and grows with insane colours so yer u can look at the fish but u could spend more time looking at the corals.

Ive only got 4 corals cos the car idea has now arrived in my young age and well the tank can w8 but even now ppl who come round watch it for least 10 mins and are amazing by the corals, fish are the addition in my tank :p

yhea, i was planning on getting the smallest hippo tang i could find, although it is hard for me to understand how a fish that small would want a tank that big  well, i guess that could work for a year or so, after all i know a freind with a big tank B)

Although Blue Tangs grow quite fast, a tiny 1 inch one would probably grow to 3 inches after a year, and if topthrill can have a larger tank to house it in by then, then there is no problem with doing so.

I have heard the 'I will rehouse when it is bigger' a thousand times- what a crock that is

If you are going to cram a tang in to an unsuitable tank then you would be best adviced to read up on ich now as you may need the infomation soon

Oh & Tangs are usually the last fish to add to a tank - hopefully by that time you will realise you tank is to small & do a tang a favour

salt water fish .com says that a hippo tang needs a 45 galon -_- but i guess thats just in the case of the small ones. but annyway if i need a biger tank i supose i could get one, i havent even bought the tank yet, just saved up alot of money :fun:
