New Tank Smells After 5 Days

I really hope your right about that. I'm just getting a little upset with since I got this tank how many mistake I've already made. I hope once I get passed the cycle and stocking isssues everything will go nicely. I am so gonna stick around this place and pray you guys can help me get everything worked out :)

UPDATE: Yesterday I took the clown loach up to PetSmart and the manager agreed to take the fish back. That's a good thing for the fish :) So that all taken care of now.

This morning I woke up and gave the fish I had some food and noticed that the tank no long smelled! Tomorrow I'm going to go get my water tested again and by a Ph test kit and such. If they say my tanks cycled I might two or three more fish to the tank (I lost a total of 5) wise I'll wait until the tank to cycled before I add more fish.

Am I getting on the right track here?

-Nikki

Yes I would wait at least until the tank has cycled. but add fish slowly and if the smell comes back you know it is too overstocked. :)

Hello!
Please remember, I'm new here and really new at fish keeping. I know that I should have researched a lot more then I did before I started, but well, I got a little ahead of myself... I know that I made the biggest mistake in fish keeping - adding fish within the first 48 hours... :X

Anyway's, on to my question: I've only had the tank set-up for about 5 days now and did everything as the booklet that came with the tank said to do. I got everything set up and added a few same Tetra fish after the 48 hours (as the booklet said, now after researching I found that I shouldn't have done that for atleast 2 weeks or more)

But about 2 days ago I went to feed the fish and noticed that the tank had odd smell to it. I'm not even sure how to explain it... it's not a "fishy" smell or a 'dirty water' smell. I have no clue what it is but its almost getting worse...

Can anyone help me out?

Thanks,
-Nikki

If you have any bog wood then this will be the culprit! Had to throw all of mine away as it just rotted in the tank, makes the water go a yellow colour too.

"If you have any bog wood then this will be the culprit!" - I don't have any DogWood. But thanks anyways.

UPDATE: I took the water to be tessted and they said that I'm pretty much cycled but to wait for a week or so before adding anymore fish to the tank.

Not to add that the smell I was talking about? All gone! 100%.

Atleast I'm getting somewhere now!

from what i've heard, NTS can cause fowl-smelling water.
anyhow, on behalf of my idiot petsmart associates, i apologize for any inconvenience they may have caused you. unfortunately, some petsmarts (especially newer ones) don't know squat. the other day, a guy came in talking about how another petsmart had tried to sell him cichlids and pacus for his 20 gallon tank. :/

I hope things are going better for you at this point.

Here are a few pointers.

Clown Loaches grow way to big for a small tank like that. They can be in a smaller tank for a little while but they grow to around 7 inches, sometimes larger if in a big enough tank.

If you are showing cloudiness (like a little bit of milk poured into water)that comes & goes, it is part of a bacteria bloom most likely. Can be harmful to fish. Ammonia should be 0 before putting fish in or else it can kill weak fish, and any fish that has just been transported is already stressed out making it weaker than normal.

I operate an online service to help you to improve your success in the hobby if you are interested. www.tankkeeper.com

"On behalf of my idiot petsmart associates, i apologize for any inconvenience they may have caused you" - Truthfully I thought they seemed pretty helpful. But really after what everyone here as told me here, idk.

"Clown Loaches grow way to big for a small tank like that. They can be in a smaller tank for a little while but they grow to around 7 inches, sometimes larger if in a big enough tank." - I already took the Clown Loache back to the PetSmart

"If you are showing cloudiness (like a little bit of milk poured into water)that comes & goes, it is part of a bacteria bloom most likely" - My tanks been crystal clear for a few days now.

That happens a lot, I went from a 1 gal :p tank to a 15  to a 30 ;) I now have a 55gal :hyper: .

My family and my 'roommates' think that I have gone crazy now. I got my 20gal that was almost done cycling and I get a 5gal as well and am starting the cycle all over again... and now I have 2 tanks... oy.

Yup, I've really gone fish crazy pretty quickly. lol :)

QUICK QUESTION: About the new 5gal tank I'm still fishless cycling, anyone know of any small goldfish that I could keep in this size tank?
