Well i picked up the new (free) tank yesterday and got a whole load of RO to hopefully fill it. I was close but it is about 4" from full. The tank is a Juwel Vision 260 with the internal filter stripped out. Took a lot of cleaning to get it clean enough for me to be happy with but its come out pretty nice. I have used all the equipment from my last tank which I think will be perfectly adequate for the moment.

looks good how many gallons ?
and are u going to put a black or blue background on it?

57 Gallons (260 L divided by 4.54 = 57)
Blue background will go on tomorrow to hide all those ugly cables!

Ben :)

Lovely tank and good choice with the blue background :good:

Well at the moment I have a Black & White clown, a Bi-Colour Blenny, Royal Gramma, Blue Pipefish and a scooter dragonet.

I now plan on getting a twinspot goby and maybe a tang of somesorts and probably a wrasse later on... Just gotta let the tank settle a bit first!

How easy-to-keep would you call pipefish? I've gotten numerous conflicting reports.

Nice tank, by the way. :good:

Tank looks good Ben but not too sure about the fish list.

Scooter Dragonets are notoriously difficult to keep sucessfully and generally need well matured aquaria with a refugium to keep up the supply of live food they need.

Pipefish are generally difficult to sustain as they cannot compete with fish for food and usually require slow moving water to allow them some chance to collect what food they can - this is the opposite to what most corals and fish require, hence they are usually kept in a species only tank, sometime with seahorses.

Are you up to speed on the requirements of these fish, if not, maybe swapping them at the LFS for something more appropriate might be a thought?

Speaking for Ben, I'm pretty sure he knows what he's dealing with. One of our most experienced guys, he is.

Thanks for the pointers bob but I wouldnt keep them If I didnt think I could keep them successfully. The blue pipefish I have had for over a year and a half and it eats pretty much anything. The scooter dragonet I have had for about 6 months, it replaced the one I had prior to that which jumped out after having that one about 6 months. Its nice and fat, not emaciated like so many you see.

Working at a fish shop I have it very easy if I do need to take any fish back or anything like that, but I am totally confident that I can keep the pipefish happy with slightly more "boisterous" fish, as it is already well settled in. He glides about the tank and the flow doesnt seem to bother him as there is plenty of rockwork he can investigate and hide if he did want to.

Personally it is the only pipefish I would keep in a reef because from what I have seen they are the only ones that live happily and eat well. Others like banded pipefish and snake pipe fish can be an utter pain to feed, and its not fair keeping a fish you don't even think will feed, so I don't plan to keep any other sorts of pipefish.

Nice selection of fish you have there. I love the Scooter Dragonet, thinking of adding one to our tank somewhere down the line.
Have you got any pics of your Pipefish as I don't think I've seen one before? :good:

Are you thinking of Pairing the Pipe with a mate Ben

I had a pair of Blue Banded Pipes in the past, they were fantastic fish to watch, I got lucky in that they ate almost any frozon/live food I added.

:good:
