following on from my tank progression thread, I decided to add black gravel to darken the tank abit.

This is how it used to look;

and this is how it looks now

what do you think?

its really beautiful :)
i loved it when you posted pics the other day, but i love it even more with the darker gravel, nice one :)

looks much better with the dark substrate, is that vallis real? its incredibly green, well if it is the tank will look much nicer once it reaches the surface. And tell me to shut up if you like but if you moveall the wood 5 inches to the left or right it will look much better, the middle block distracts the eyes from the rest of the tank, its a little aquascaping trick - i forget the name though.

yeah the Vallis is real, its only been in about a week, so I havent had much time to kill it yet :D

No offence dude, but it looks like it is dying off already. Hopefully it is just because it is adapting to the new tank.

Is that Jave fern you have in the substrate, because the rhizome is going to need to be exposed? Try supergluing it to the wood. :good:

Dave.

The roots basically, they like to grow 'on' things, and can rot under the substrate.
Actually,in saying that,Java ferns don't have a rhizome, they have a mass of brown/black hairy root system called crampons I believe which they use to cling onto things.

How can you tell its dying off already? If you're going from colour then dont, because the second picture (new one) is slightly over-exposed, hence why the wood looks lighter, and you can see more detail on the heater on the right.

I only have 1.4wpg light and no CO2 injection. Plus I dose with tetra plant Plantamin and also have some feeder sticks in the substrate.

Fingers crossed it should thrive.

It could quite possibly be Java Fern, I dont know what it is. its only been in for about a week or so (used to just mingle in the tank) so I'll keep an eye on it

By the dying off at the tips.

I`m sure it is Java fern. The long, horizontal stem like growth that all the leaves are coming off is the rhizome, and will need to be exposed. Superglue is the easiest method for attaching it.

Dave.

EDIT: Whoops, spelt my name wrong.

Really like the tank, love the vallis curtain. Gravel change really does the business

fingers crossed its just where its new to the tank (like you say)
If it is java fern whats the best way of growing it on top of the substrate for a grass-like effect? Can I just glue/tie it to something that sinks then let it grow?

TIA and I hope I did'nt come across as rude, was having way too many questions fired at me here, I was getting abit irate so apoligise if I came across as being blunt.

looks fantastic in both pics!! makes me really want
a)a bigger tank (at least a 125L)
b)to go plant and wood cray

The black gravel looks really nice!

Good luck with the plants!
