Try and think of your filter media as paired with the fish, not the tank or filter.

So, if you're moving half the fish, half the media has to move with them; all the fish, all the media, a quarter of the fish, a quarter of the media, etc

thanks, I think I wasn't quite getting it.  I had always looked at it as being matched to the tank and the water.
 
it's a steep learning curve with tropical fish, and just when you think you've "got it" you try something else and find you have a whole new load of stuff to learn!
 
I'm enjoying it though, and after years of being sure I would kill everything I ever owned, I'm proud to say that I haven't lost a single fish thanks to quick Google searches and having a genuine attachment to my fish who are all real characters!
