Howdy all,
I recently set up a nice lil 29 gallon fresh water tank.
I have my first *starter* fish to get the bio's going in my tank. They are 6 Glow light Danio's. They are super healthy but one has taken to hiding up behind the heater. I think it may be a female but am unsure, they have only been with me for a week and a half. Reading on the web, her body shape seems to be more belly and less slender like what I think is a group of males 4 for sure, maybe :p
My thought is to add 4 or 6 more to the group and see if that helps *her* be happier.
Thanks for your thoughts and a cool looking forum
Cheers GG

No mention is made, so the question needs asking...did you cycle the tank, and if so, how? Also, do you have any live aquatic plants in the tank, floating or planted in the substrate?

Welcome to TFF, there are some very knowledgeable members here. :hi:

I did not cycle the tank, it's been running filtered for a couple months. I did just read the article about cycling but I am *breaking the tank in* with live fish, as I said Starter fish :). One reason why I posted here and am asking questions is that I don't want to blow it by adding more fish before the tank is ready. I wish I had bought twelve to begin with. No live plants as yet. Thanks for the welcome :)

That being the case, and since you have no live plants (they take up ammonia rapidly) the problem could be ammonia, or subsequently nitrite. A tank running for any length of time is not going to establish a biological filter unless ammonia is present to kick-start it. Have you a test for ammonia, nitrite and nitrate? These numbers are important here.

I will be getting my water re-tested at my local fish store Friday before adding anyone else, I should have gotten the wide range test kit when I bought my PH test kit but as funds are light did not. I am using a Starter Bacteria additive which removes ammonia and nitrite. Am pretty sure the hiding fish is a behavioral thing vs any water issues. These guys are difficult to sex but I am pretty sure the hider is female, possibly in a group of all males. Fyi this is coming on week three for the tank with fish and I will get the wide range tester when funds permit.

You can only run a new tank with fish if you have live plants, and not just one or two, lots and lots of plant, you need about 30-50% of the volume of your tank in plants, growing, before adding fish. Otherwise you will have problems.

I recently set up a tank with 6 glowlight danios.
I set up the tank with a few plants on wood, 6 small marimba moss balls and a good amount of water lettuce from and established tank and a portion of salvinia.
I have 3 amano shrimp in there to use up any food laying on the substrate.
After the tank had settled for a week or so I added the danios along with a portion of mature media from another tank.
I supplemented this with some night-out microbe lift to help things along.
I fed the livestock lightly for a couple of weeks and all is well.
I always attribute water lettuce to being a good natural filter and have kept it in my tanks for as long as I remember.

I was going to leave this forum silently but I can't.
One I did not ask about cycling.
Two, I didn't ask about planted tanks.
Three No one who responded addressed my question at all.
The last response is completely false. I had a tank for years! without any fresh plants at all, your claim is 100% false.
A bunch of alarmist freaking out unknowing new fish tank users.
Joe if you read this buddy, flee!!!! These folks are fish tank alarmists!
bye! (keeping it clean for the kids)

Well, I see nothing in what is posted by three of us in this thread to substantiate this outburst. Doctors cannot assess sickness without data, and neither can any of us who keep fish. We were attempting to get the facts, and we attempted to eliminate issues as best we could even though not having some of the information asked for.

:dunno:

We all are trying to help.
You don't NEED live plants but they are highly beneficial. Don't use plastic plants as they can cut fish. Silk plants are better suited.
We can not tell you what is wrong with your fish without proper information so we tend to help with other issues until we have the proper info needed for the main issue.
Don't let the door hit ya!

im sorry :)
Not needed at all Connor. Very disrespectful.

Just feeding fire then.
The goal is to calm the other person down and make sure we don't insult them further whether it was an accident or not. Even if they were in the wrong (not saying that they were were not here)
