a friend of mine was asking my opinion yesterday about if he could have an aquarium in his new conservatory, its about 12ft square with one brick wall with 2 other walls and the roof made glass. My main concern would obviously be the amount of sunlight that the tank would be getting ie algea, has anyone got any experience with keeping a tank in a conservatory ? Only been fish keeping about 6 months so was quite chuffed when he asked for my advice, just a shame i couldn't give him a definate answer !!!

cheers

If it has constant light on it, it will produce ALOT of algae. Your mate may have the bust out the algae scrubber a few more times then normal, if he has algae eaters they could help, but I have no real experience with keeping a tank in a conservatory but I have kept a tank next to a window :|

I used to keep my tank in the conservatory but it became overrun with algae and in the summer months the water temperature raised way too much, so I'm never gonna' keep a tank in the conservatory again...

thanks for the fast replies, i had a feeling these were the sort of replies i would get though, it seems such a shame cos he could get a nice big tank in there, his wife wants a plasma tv on the wall but it seems such a waste of space !!

they could keep the blinds down all the time, but that would defy the point of a conservatry :D

i did put that idea forward but it didn't go down to well with his other half !!! :good:

the thing with conservatories in the uk is that during the winter conservatories get very cold, so heaters are on 24/7(alot of electric) and in the summer its way to hot and the tank temp rises above normaly sometimes by 6-8'c. And another downside is algae unless the wall can keep most of the light away for atleast half or the day.

How about his wife has the conservatory and he has the living room :hey:
Sounds like a fair deal to me ;)
