New Tank Advise On Filter Please

Forget all the rena vs fluval vs ehiem rubbish.

Just buy the biggest filter you can afford.

Simples :good:
thats not really an ideal solution tbh. surely you want to be spending your money on a well built, reliable, easy to use and all round decent piece of kit. buying the biggest might not be the best overall.

lots of people have been purchasing the all pond solutions (aps) filters that according to the website have a huge flow rate but the filters are very cheap to buy. i would love to hear from these people in a year or 2 to see how the filters are bearing up. peersonally i wouldnt touch them with a barge pole but i understand that the price is very tempting. i think they even have a built in UV so for about £80 (maybe less) you get a huge flow rate, UV steriliser but a badly built and fragile filter.... they are based on the tetratec design looking at them but just too weak and delicate.

dont forget the filter is the heart of your tank. if it fails then you are in trouble. a filter is just that a filter so dont get carried away with built in UV, electronic flow rates etc etc etc as they are all just something else to replace in time or go wrong. dont get caught up in the electronic gadget thing.....

if you want the biggest filter you can buy for the money get an FX5 but on a tank of this size it will blast your fish against the side of the tank.... so again not the best advice really to get the biggest you can get....

+1: I have had some external filters have the plastic snap after 3 years, and I have others which are over 20 years old and working flawlessly.

Ok let me rephrase.

Get the BEST you can afford.

Tom

wife has a friend who works in a lfs and told him i'm after filter and heater etc etc
anyway she said he can get me the new fluval 306 and a 200w heater for £100 as soon as stock arrives(new out no reviews)

now you see my dilemma

i was set on getting the TetraTec EX1200 (has great reviews ) but for a little more got the latest filter and a heater!

any thoughts welcome

Why don't you go into the shop and have a look at the filters in person? Also, have a look at the heater reviews, some are not that reliable or often don't heat to what you set them to (which was my experience with heaters by Hagen).

My experience is that Fluval used to make excellent internal filters (I haven't *really* used internal filters in the last 2.5 years), but they are not that great at externals.
