Hi, i have purchased a new, larger tank of 28 UK gallons or so. (92cm long, 31cm deep, 44cm high)

It has an undergravel filter, have read a few bad things about this type o filter, old fashioned etc now.

I have 2 fancy goldfish of about 1.5 inches. What filtration woudl you recommend????

Advice much appreciated.

Also, i read the advice on goldfish requiring 20 gallon for the 1st one and 10 more for every other, this tank is adeqaute i think as they are fancies and dont grow as big as standard goldfish.

am i correct in assuming that this will be adequate for a significant amount of time, im not intending on adding anymore fish.

Thanks for your help.

The "20gals for the first goldfish, 10gals for every other one after that" thing is for fancy goldfish, if you wanted normal/slim goldfish you would need a 75gal minimum since they are a lot more active than fancy goldfish and grow much larger.
However, when figuring out the right stocking for your tank, most people use US gals as a guide rather than UK gallons, so even though your tank is only around 28gals, its meets your goldfishes needs in US gallons.
I've found fluval filters quite good in my experience so far, i have one in my goldfish tank and it handles their mess fine no problem :) .

Cheers for that, ive been looking at the fluval 3, it says it can handle upto 130 litres, mine is a little less, 126 or something, do you think this is adequate???? or is it wise to over filter the water?????

I would probably go for a fluval 4 because goldfish generally produce more waste than what a lot of tropical fish do, so its good to have a powerful filter you know will definately handle their bioload. With the fluval 3, it might just cope, but it will probably struggle a bit.
I calculated your exact gallons/litre's as well on the practical fishkeeping (pfk) website as well;

Dimensions 92 x 31 x 44cm/36" x 12" x 17
Surface area 0.29 sqm/3.12 sq ft/ inches sq in
Volume 125 l./28 gal. (33.02 US gal.)
Probable volume 113 l./25 gal. (30 US gal.)

:)

Thanks a lot, picking tank up tomorrow, will get hold of a fluval 4. Are there any other pumps perhaps that may be more suitable?????? Something in between a 3 and a 4?????? Maybe another brand???

Im not in a huge rush because ned to get myself an adequate platform for the tank to be positioned on (father is building me one) Plenty of time to read up on cycling etc.....

Also, how effective are airstones at increasing the oxygen content of water???? worth it or not????

thanks!!!!!!

There are probably other filters with power between a fluval 3 and 4, although i don't have any experience with them personally- most of my filters are generally very powerful. I think you would be better though going for a fluval 4 though since goldfish do best in strongly filtered tanks for all sorts of reasons like oxygen, waste removal and excercise in the current etc :) .

Airstones can be very effective are increasing oxygen content in the water, and can be a life saver when facing crisis's like big bacterial blooms or tank over-heating or when using strong, suffocating meds on fish, having an airstone can make the fish a lot more comfortable in the tank :) .

Thanks for your help, im sure ill be back with more questions!!!!

Hi back again with more questions!

Ok, i have my new 28 UK gallon tank about ready to be filled with water and the cycling process to begin.

I have an aquaball filter 2212, can deal with upto 200 litre tanks so its more than adeqaute fro my 125 litre.

The question i have is: i have 2 1.5 inch fancies in my 6 gallon tank (i no this is way overstocked which is why im upgrading - having learnt the hardway!)

The black moor i have in their is not very well, i did an ammonia test which was 0.1, Nitrite was about 2, Nitrate was 50 and ph 7.5, ive been doing water changes etc for a while but basicaly the tank is unhealthy water wise due to the overstocking. (i think it is cycling all over again due to an over clean on my part about a month ago- again due to lack of knowledge)

Ok so, i dont think the black moor will survive im afraid, it aint lookin good. I am planning on using the other fancy to start the cycling of the new tank then if the black moor survives ad that at a later stage of the cycle.

What would your advice be on this? In terms of time scale, when to add what fish etc....

The fancy i have that seems ok was used to cycle the small tank and has survived white spot etc... so i think its quite a hardy little bugger!

Anyway, advise woudl be appreciated, cheers.
