RIGHT........ so here's the score, im going to be setting up a rio 180 for a friends 13 yr old daughter.... and yes I know its probably a start for a bit of disaster but fingers crossed, i want to get everything tip top before leaving them.

see if you think that the fish i am thinking of getting them are acceptable?

right so here it goes for a quick plan:-

golden or blue rams although going more golden i thinks
honey/dwarf or other mini gourami's
tetra of some kind, probably glowlight or plain old neons/cardinals
maybe some panda cory's too

I know it sounds a little basic, but on my recolection all of the above, barring probably the rams are fairly easy, could anyone suggest some reasonable numbers on the above :D and any idea's for other or different additions if my selection is a bit off.

I mean im trying to stock what a 13 year old girl will go awwwwwww haha so if anyone has any ideas :D shot them this way, they will be kindly taken on board.

thanks guys and gals
Paul

That sounds like a fine stocking. However, rams aren't always that hardy, and may not be the best choice for the girl. A group of corys would do well in the tank, and a school of tetras, like cardinals. :)

Good luck! Let us know how it works out. :D

The Blue Rams probably wont be suitable, all Rams require sand regardless of species, they're earth eaters, and they require temperatures much higher than your standard aquarium fish, also softer, more acidic water is preferred, the Bolivian Ram is a much more suitable alternative.

From what you have mentioned I'd go for:

A pair of Bolivian Rams
30 Neon/Cardinal Tetra's
15 Panda Corydoras
You could go for some Shrimp if you wish, I wouldn't go for the Gourami's however, they'd detract from the Rams.

All personal preference but I won't go for the tetra. I guess it all depends on the pH (and hardness some might argue).

Honey gouramis are very hardy (according to books). They don't get too big but might look a bit small in a 180L. You won't want too many of those either (usually 1m 2/3f). I have 2m 2f and they seemed to get along ok. Looks the right size for my 90L. If you must have gourami consider the 3-spots or pearl. Dwarf gourami are more aggressive than honey too.

Tetras are more suitable for acidic water (esp neon and cardinal).

Bolivian rams sounds like a good idea. They are not as colourful as the german variety but a lot more hardy (according to books again).

Panda corys are more fragile compare to other I believe. Again, consider Sterbai or 3-lined. Bronze, Peppered and Albino are pretty hardy too.

Shrimps are interesting one. If you have a (relatively) heavily planted setup like mine then you might not see them much. I have 6, and might see one standing on the branch once every other day.

I'm a believer in matching fish to pH. Not convinced about aquarium bred fish being more hardy and thrive in any pH. So I would check the pH first. the fishes I have suggested as I understand will be happy with pH up to 8.

Golden rams, although beautiful, are even more sensitive than german blues tbh
