I have got a new rekord 120 tank. (about 33 gallons). I have in it 4 gouramis and I want to put some angelfish in it. But I also want some smaller shoaling fish so that there is a bit of a variation in size. What smaller fish would you recommend that wouldn't get eaten by the angelfish or gouramis? I was thinking maybe Tiger Barbs. Any help will be much appreciated.

Well i would think that the Tiger Barbs would be to nippy for the Angelfish. But the aggression is reduced when kept in larger numbers. However there is a more peaceful looking likey the Pentazona Barb - Barbus pentazona pentazona (Search on Google Images)

Angelfish are well known for picking off Neon Tetras, so i would think they are out of the mix.

But small peaceful Characins or Cyprinids would work fine (e.g. Lemon Tetra, Harlequin Rasbora, Flame Tetra, Head-and-Tail Light Tetra) but be wary of the Serpae Tetra since they have a reputation of being a bit nippy.

We have a rekord 120. I don't know if 4 gourami's and angelfish will be too much for the tank? I have 4 angelfish and a few people were saying that was borderline!

Anyway don't get neons! We had a nice shoal of 16, who lived happily for about 5 months until one angelfish decided he liked neons, and ate them all except one!

We have guppies in there though, who aren't bothered by the angels at all (not sure how they get on with gouramis?), they are really playful so fun to watch, and we also have lined barbs, who are not as nippy as other barbs, so they are fine in the tank, but any other barbs will be too nippy.

We were going to look for some other small fish to replace the neons, obviously something a bit bigger than neons. I was told that any fish bigger than a neon would be fine. Although we've decided to wait and let the angels grow, we're moving after Christmas anyway and the tank is quite happy now, so don't want to disrupt it!

We also have algae shrimp, which are right little characters now they've grown and settled in! The biggest one has started stealing food from the fishes mouths!

Hope you find some nice fish!

I just got the mental image of a shifty shrimp grabbing a fish and jamming a claw in it's mouth and rummaging around for food ><

Both serpae tetras and lemon tetras have a reputation for being nippy. How about harlequin rasboras, they wouldn't fit in an angel's mouth.

Thanks for all your advice. I was thinking about harlequins actually. But are you sure the angels wouldn't eat them?

What about some Dwarf Neon Rainbowfish - only grow to about 6cm
