Im getting a new skimmer for my 55 gal. I was wanting a good hang-on. I ran across the "Red Sea Prizm Pro Deluxe Protein Skimmer" It said it was good up to 300 gal! I plan on in the future getting a larger tank but am not quite sure when that is. I was thinking I would just get a good one now, so that I don't have to pay for yet another one later on down the road. I also want one that is realativly quiet. What do you guys think of this one? Will it be too much for my tank? And also the skimmer I am using now puts thousands of tiny bubbles right into my tank. I think that it makes it look kinda bad. Is this just my faulty skimmer or do they all do this? Oh yeah what is underskimming?

I like the prizm because it underskims. underskims is a more diluted foam it looks light brown or white. instead of a rich foam is dark brown almost black which is filled with more junk. The reason I like underskimming is it doesn't take out all my additives in the tank even though it still takes them out. I havn't notice any bubbles in my tank unless the skimmer is on full. I have the one for the 100 gallon skimmer on my tank I like the prizm there is a couple of other people that like this skimmer on there tank.

Prizms are ok if you like underskimming. However they are not quiet. They can be very noisy in fact. There is a method to making them quiet as they appear to have a design fault that can easily be rectified.

I have a juwel vision 180 and I am having a devil of a job to fit a skimmer to my tank! The prism will fit I am told by my LFS BUT I would need to modify not only the lid but the frame by cutting out a chunk with a hacksaw, not really poss as the tank is setup.
You could do what I have done, buy a cheap Lees airdriven skimmer (£16ish) you would need a poweful air pump to run it and they are a fiddle to set up and you would need to cut a hole in the flap. I don't know of any skimmer that will fit without modifying the lid/frame

i cut my lid on a rekord 120 although because of the lighting electronics it doesnt shut down right now. i'm gonna get an arcadia overtank luminaire soon so that;ll solve that.
