Hi, thanks for taking the time to read this, and thanks for a great site/forum :)

I have set my Fluval Chi 19l (5 US gal) up and I'm doing a fishless cycle. The tank will be for a single male Betta.

I prefer a cycled tank, I know some say Betta are fine without filtration but I always like to have a filter.

I struggled to find anywhere local which could give me some live plants ideal for the tank, with it being low light and wanting long/floating plants, so I've opted for very soft artificial plants.

I've attached a photo of the tank as it stands, would like some input as I'm not sure if it's a little crowded (even though it will only be housing one Betta).

I'd also like to hear from any members who know of any reputable Betta breeders in or around the Manchester area, within 20 miles of OL16 if possible.

Thanks

Looks fine to me :)

Are the plants plastic or silk?
If they're plastic, get a pair of pantyhose and run them over the plant, if the pantyhose snag, then the plant is not safe for a betta and needs to be removed.

Have you thought of ordering online for the plants? eBay has a lot of plant sellers, often with good deals.

Does this tank have a lid? I can't really tell from the picture >.<

I think it does? If you look up the top you can see some brighter light from where the lid ends around the filter.

Hi, yes it has a lid. I'm all ready for the jumping little ninjas haha

I did the pantyhose/tights test..... even got some funny looks whilst doing so in the lfs.

Ive done a lot of research on Betta fish before setting the tank, now all I need is the dude who'll be living there :)

My lfs and even the local Pets at Home store have Betta in, and although I'd like to rescue one from Pets at Home they are not the type I'm looking for, colour wise.

Thanks again for taking the time to read this :)

Ahh okie, sorry just had to check! My eyesight is terrible :/

I bet you did  Worth it though to make sure they're safe.

Have you read the betta article at the top of the page? I know you said you've done the research I just wanted to check (I like checking things.)

You could always order one online if your LFS doesn't have any that interest you.

Another thing I wanted to check  Is how are you cycling the tank? And it looks quite lovely, forgot to say that in my other post.

I'm cycling using Nutrafin cycle, and used dechlorinator initially. Got my api test kit ready.

Nothing wrong with checking, my ocd won't allow me to do anything out of routine haha.

Yes read the article, along with dozens more haha :)

Another pic, side view to see where the main planting is located at the back.

EDIT: I did a fish less cycle on my 180litre tank feeding the tank. Thought I would try a chemical way this time.
Had to sell my 180 due to space issues :(

From reading, the ammonia cycle is similar to how the nutrafin works. I am on no rush as I said so if it's not working out I'll opt for the ammonia cycle which is on here.

I'm after Halfmoon or Crown Tail. Reds, Blues, Orange. Really vibrant colours.... it's why apart from Green there's no colour in the tank, it's going to be all about the fish. :)

I think you could easily find what you're looking for on aquabid, if you hadn't checked that site out already.

I had a quick look but no keen on having one sent that far, can't see anything local.

I've contacted a few local aquatic shops and been advised they have them in and have a decent turnover so if none in I want one week there may be week after.

Thanks

I'm sure you'll find a very pretty one at your LFS, was just offering up another option ^_^

Hi and welcome!
You did some good research and I'm sure you'll find a Betta fish sooner or later!
If you have the patience and ask your LFS when they usually receive their fish, you should go there on the same day.
I got mine for 5$ and I'm really happy about him, he's beautiful and wouldn't trade him for any other! :p

Just gotta be patient! :)

Patience I can do haha

My wife goes mad as it takes me months to make decisions, but I want everything to be perfect.

Since my last post I have 3 aquatic centres within 30 miles of home who are going to keep me informed. Then when my tank is optimum I will pay visits and choose my new buddy.

I'll be sure to post pics when I do, but don't expect them any time soon lol :)

*as a sidenote relating to my initial query, I'm surprised there aren't more actual breeders specifically for these beautiful fish anywhere near me.

Most of the breeders are from Asia because they have been in the market for so long and know what and how to breed nice fish.

In Montreal I know of 2 breeders, which produce show quality fish.
I have found them through classifieds, (kijiji).
Maybe if you hunt on there! ;)
