Hi all!

Just nabbed myself an absolute bargain of a 2nd hand tank - 72x18x42" for £50! :good:

The only bad points are that the glass has quite a lot of very fine scratches, looks as though sand or gravel found its way between the glass and a cleaning magnet at some point.
None of the scratches are deep enough to feel with my nails so I'm going to have a go at polishing them out with cerium oxide - I'll post some before & after pics as there are a few threads on the forum about this buy not many go on to report the results (possibly a bad thing? )

Anyway, I digress. the only other fault with the tank is that it has obviously suffered with algae in the past and this has worked its way into / stained the (clear) sealant. now i dont want to get into removing this sealant but I was thinking that if I were to get some black sealant & go over the existing that might mask the problem quite nicely?

Any opinions would be appreciated!

Hi there

Nice bargain! anyways I looked into polishing out the scratches using CO in my second hand tank, but didn't bother in the end as someone showed me some pics of what they did and it sort of blurred the glass, I havent still got em and to be honest cant remember where they came from but it was like a blurred effect.

Just a heads up anyway maybe they over did it before i dont really no.

Have you filled it yet as most of mine arnt visable now its full, only a couple of deep ones.

Good luck!

Hi Andy,im pretty sure you will have to remove the old sealant because sealant want stick to sealant and it will eventually peel off. Im just going off what i know from the building trade,i may be wrong hopefully somebody will be along shortly to correct me.lol

Good luck with the tank mate.

#41####, Hadn't thought of that!!

When I bought it it was half full but not properly set up, the scratches didn't realy notice below the water line but now the tank is empty it seems worse than it probably realy is. We've got a guy coming around on Monday to fit some new patio doors so I thought I might ask him if it's worthwhile polishing out the scratches, hopefully he'll have some pointers!

Cheers

I'd like to point out that the word which was censored was only a slightly stonger version of 'Darn' - this is one of those situations where censoring a word makes it seem ruder than it is!

And I'll be darned if thats the case!!! :hyper:
