It's really beautiful! My question ... how do you get your java fern to stay so nice??

thanks again for the compliments.

@ This old spouse, i have grown Java under low tech and high tech conditions, and under high tech is where it comes into it own. Under low tech with the right ferts and flow, it can look good. But IME, a little C02 helps it a great deal.

Wow what a beautiful set up! I love the landscaping and the tetras.. Inspiration for us all :)

it looking really good ian i love that setup..... i wish my plants would actually grow more than half an inch a month.... and that is the rotala indica

thanks Mishmash

the thread of the full journal is here

this gives a full list of plants, wood and stuff...

The substrate is Columbo florabase, IMO once of the best planting substrates. It is fine for Cory's just make sure that you don't have any carpeting plants. The substrate does leach ammonia, so keep up with the water changes and you'll be fine. I have added fish on day one using this substrate and a mature filter and never had a problem. Some MA stock this stuff, if not then have a look at Aquaessentials, they sell it. This tank is 126ltr and it took 2x10ltr bags. Its well worth it though, you'll get the best start for your plants.

and the wood is Manzanita wood, again Aquaessentials have a load in at the moment.

Hi Ian, just to go back to this and ask a follow up. You said make sure I dont have any carpeting plants (in combo with colombo florabase) why is this, and if I wanted a carpeted area, how could I overcome this problem ? Cheers.

sorry Mishmash, i meant with Cories. It's fine with Columbo...Cories tend to dig any carpet plant up. There has also been problems with plants like Riccia and moss being used as the Cories can get their barbels trapped in whatever you hold the stuff down with.

and thank you all for your kind comments.

When I attached java moss to my bogwood with fishing line, that's exactly what happened. A cory got caught in it and I thought I'd lose it, but after several days she did recover. After that incident I started attaching any plants with Super Glue.

OK but they are ok if you want to create a carpet effect with say HC or dwarf chain sword?

Hc with cories IME, is a no no, they will dig it up and you'll wake up to floating Hc. This is why you don't find many cories in aquascapes with carpets. They are more trouble than they're worth. I love corries BTW, but i like my plants more lol.

You might get away with a chain sword carpet.

I will put a sign up for the cories so they know not to go on my HC carpet then , LOL. OK, well seriously though, I love corys more than I love plants so swarf chain sword it is.... thats a useful thing to know before forking out on tons of expensive HC pots. Cheers.
